Comparing India and Europe is comparing apples with oranges. one would expect better from senior journalists - even if they belong to the right-wing ecosystem. They are again recycling a tired, dangerous trope: caricaturing Muslims as inherently violent, militant, barbaric and uncivilised, and reducing protests in Europe to a “Muslim problem”. The insinuation is unmistakable: India, too, must beware of its own “Muslim problem”. This is not just about portraying Europe as a cautionary tale. We have seen this very playbook, this very toolkit deployed in India often. Even during recent protests in Delhi, individuals affiliated with the Sangh were seen posing as Muslims, attempting to provoke communal discord and resorting to violence. The objectives? To discredit peaceful, legitimate movements for education, electoral integrity, transparency and justice by branding them part of ‘Abdul’s’ so-called “anti-India agenda” and to villainise Indian Muslims. But here is the fundamental distinction this narrative deliberately obscures: in Europe, the protesters are the rioters. In India, it is the State and state sponsored non-state actors - the Sangh brigade. Modi-Shah’s police have repeatedly used brute force against peaceful protesters and so have right-wing ‘activists’ posing as police. These are fundamentally different situations. To conflate them is not analysis; it is propaganda. India is the land of Gandhi, whose enduring legacy places Ahimsa and Satya at the heart of our political consciousness. Instead of acknowledging the Opposition’s efforts to channel public anger and discontent through peaceful, Gandhian protest, the right-wing media has chosen to run their own vile fear mongering-campaign. Intellectually dishonest. Deeply disappointing.

Anjali from AISA called me just now .. @neha_aisa was picked up by Delhi Police at Mandi House while on her way to join the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest. Taken away alone, without her phone, her whereabouts are now unknown. @DelhiPolice What kind of law and order allows the police to detain a citizen and keep her location a secret? Detention cannot become disappearance. Delhi Police must disclose where Neha is, ensure her access to he r family ,friends and comrades . moreover police should explain the grounds for her detention. @DelhiPolice - remember you are accountable to the law—not above it.

Neha has been detained alone and taken to an unknown location! They don't have their phone! Delhi Police must answer: where is Neha? Once again an abduction, not detention!

When we got suspended from Cornell for our peaceful, anti-genocide encampment, Cornell admin threatened to attach a permanent notice to our transcripts about the suspensions. Cornell chose to protect this rapist, and chose not to notify or warn NSU about him.
New: One of the Cornell students accused of gang rape transferred to a Florida university. The university says it was unaware of the allegations when it admitted him, raising questions about what disciplinary info follows students between colleges. shorturl.at/pTyCC

In 1932, on the first anniversary of Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom, a 16 year-old boy hoisted the tricolour at Hoshiarpur District Court in Punjab. For this crime, he was shot and jailed by the British. That young boy went on to become the General Secretary of CPI(M). His name was Harkishan Singh Surjeet. Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka are in jail for gathering peacefully at Jantar Mantar and hoisting the tricolour. Student and youth protesters, along with Rajya Sabha MPs AA Rahim and V Sivadasan, were manhandled and are being detained by the Delhi Police for marching peacefully to Jantar Mantar. Many students, including women, are yet to recover from the shocking assault and torture they have been subjected to over the past few days. They are still hitting the streets to defend the right to vote and the right to protest. Persecuting peaceful protesters did not end well for the British. Modi and Amit Shah will be no different.

The only people whom I find just as insufferable as the religious right of Pakistan is the religious right of India BJP. They are exactly the same: Change the name the religion and they are identical in every other way.

Left alliance is much more matured and understands the importance of alliance with CJP or Congress or any other party, which ever is on roads to save our democracy.

FACT: India's handling of the current SIR protests in Delhi is exponentially more cruel, autocratic, and oppressive than China's response to the 2019 HK protests, and it's not even close. Back then, the anti-China pro-US rioters were getting away with literally destroying and setting fire to public property, firebombing police stations, stabbing police officers, throwing smoke bombs and molotov cocktails, and more. And this went on for months on end. And the HK Police STILL showed remarkable restraint. They literally absorbed blows from the rioters but still didn't push back. Not a *single* death was caused by the police. Indeed it was the rioters who actually killed at least one civilian. Meanwhile in Delhi today, the protests are ~100% peaceful - and just look at the state response. People including women are being beaten up. Protestors are being unlawfully detained, including while gathering in a crowd of four in some areas. Protesters are being taken to unknown locations en masse in buses. The internet has been suspended. At least 57 metro stations have been closed. Countless trains have been cancelled. Many people are literally being blocked from entering Delhi at major entry points. Prominent activists are being picked up from their homes. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. All this for a protest movement that was almost entirely peaceful, with barely a single act of violence. If even a fraction of the 2019 HK violence occurred in India, we would witness hundreds of casualties within hours. Literally the army would be deployed, just like in the "democratic" USA. So the "authoritarian" Chinese regime showed exponentially more restraint in its Special Administrative Region, despite the most extreme levels of western-sponsored protests - while the "democracy" next door is cracking down with much more cruelty even for much smaller and more harmless protests. This is India's "democracy". China trembles at the power of India's freedoms.

With this high-handed police response, government has shifted the anger from Gyanesh Kumar to themselves. Very selfless.

Indian left is the only genuine and consistent force against Hindutva because they are deeply intellectually secular. If the Indian left was stronger, there would never have been any need for partition because they would have created a genuinely egalitarian culture.
The battle is on. Now, protest in front of the BJP party office in Delhi.✊🏽

81yo CPI(M) veteran and ex Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan is at Jantar Mantar and has been detained by the police. LoP Rahul Gandhi is in Chennai having lunch with his movie-star CM friend. A stark lesson in how the Opposition should and should not engage with popular protests.
