Not only fun but every few decades, necessary.
I got into computers because building stuff to solve my own problems is fun. I got lucky that it is also an in-demand and lucrative field. But to this day, I still like to somewhat irrationally reinvent the wheel with my main/only motivation being that its fun.

The arch linux installer is amazing. It drops you into a console and makes you type 30% of what is needed to build a distro. You want networking? here is a table comparing 6 networking packages. I'll wait here while you do your research.

I think people are misunderstanding Bard. Telling white lies to kids is an important tactical tool for parents.

"The entire Turbo Pascal 3.02 executable--the compiler and IDE--was 39,731 bytes. " On my m1 'usr/bin/touch' is 130KB 😢

A systems programming language is one that makes you feel emotionally safe to look at the generated assembly..
My guilty secret: I still don’t know what “systems programming” is supposed to mean.

Systems programming is the creation of programs that are reasonable to write on these languages.

Not necessarily. Almost always, kernel can set the page tables so a regular process can do the same work as a old-school kernel driver.
I think this may be an artifact of more and more custom task-specific silicon coming online; the way to talk to custom hardware goes through the kernel…

for example, Fuchsia’s graphics stack based on Vulkan is entirely in user mode.

For Fuchsia we redid the classical linked list from scratch. The C linked list are a minefield if you use them from C++. cs.opensource.google/fuchsia…
I just helped audit ~60 singly linked list implementations in C for as many vulnerabilities as we could find. It is *astonishing* that we still use this language for anything.

.. so if your startup is successful the company is a terrible place to work.
You can't solve every problem at an early-stage startup. Solve these: product cycle, user acquisition, churn. Ignore these: team dynamics, process, management.

A good read about the sources of this problem is “Systems Software Research is Irrelevant” by Rob Pike. I claim that most of the issues identified there are still valid which in turn drive away newcomers. Of course we (Fuchsia) are an exception to this trend.
