Not all internships are spent sitting behind a desk. 🐝🦗🪰🐛🦋
In Professor Joan Leong’s Entomology Lab, students are gaining hands-on experience through a paid micro-internship with the Rivers and Lands Conservancy. Their work is helping document insect biodiversity while supporting real conservation efforts across SoCal.
Along the way, the students are:
🔎 Surveying protected habitats
🔎 Studying biodiversity in native plant gardens
🔎 Identifying and curating insect specimens in the lab
🔎 Gathering data that helps protect endangered species (like the Delhi Sands flower-loving fly)

There’s a good reason real-world clients are interested in the insights of CPP's faculty and students.
@cpp_science’s new mass spectrometer gives industry and community partners access to high-end analytical capabilities.
Who’s doing the work? CPP chemistry and biochemistry students! They’ll analyze samples, interpret complex data and gain hands-on experience with technology used across pharmaceutical research, environmental monitoring, food safety and more. 💻 💊 🌱 🍎
Acquisitions like the mass spectrometer are made possible by a historic act of generosity from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott and the establishment of our Bright Tomorrow Fund designed to propel institutional priorities and expand opportunity for students.

Born #Today in 1914, George Dantzig was mathematical scientist who made contributions to industrial engineering, operations research, computer science, economics, and statistics.
One of the episosed of his life is very famous. He was late to class one day in college and copied down a few problems he saw on the board. Thinking they were homework, he completed and turned them in not realizing they were actually two famous unsolved problems in statistics.

CPP won big at the 2023 RASC-AL competition, @NASA's longest-running higher education competition. 🛰️ 🌌
The competition challenged the 15 finalist university teams to develop new concepts to improve NASA's ability to operate on the moon, Mars and beyond. A group of recent @cppengineering #CPPgrads took home an award for "SciNAP," a design proposal they developed in their senior capstone aerospace design lab. SciNAP would operate as an advanced relay station to support persistent in-space communications.
"It would act as a steppingstone for future space endeavors, enabling NASA and its partners to extend humanity’s presence deeper into the solar system and explore new frontiers.”
