The AI-driven selloff in SaaS created some interesting opportunities. Here’s the scorecard I use to evaluate the strength of a software business.
Software scorecard
• Revenue growth
• Net revenue retention (NRR)
• Gross retention
• Customer growth
• Enterprise customer growth
• ARPU growth
• Gross margin
• Free cash flow margin
• Rule of 40
• Stock-based compensation
Then I ask:
• Is there a durable moat?
• How large is the TAM?
• Is it founder-led?
• Do customers love the product?
• Does AI strengthen the business?
• Is the valuation reasonable?
• How good is their UI/UX design?
Great design is not about decoration or cleverness. It’s about shaping technology to fit human intuition. I just finished writing an article on the invisible language of good design andrewcoyle.com/blog/the-inv…
I wrote a comprehensive guide to the types of data visualizations employed in user interfaces. I hope it’s helpful in your work! andrewcoyle.com/blog/visuali…
Most AI products fail because they start with the model, not the human.
The paradox: the more powerful the AI, the more confusing the product becomes if you skip understanding people.
Designers who treat human insight as the scarce input—and AI as the abundant output—will build products that matter.
Good design feels invisible because it lets the task take center stage. When the interface draws attention to itself, it steals focus from the outcome the user actually cares about.
We optimized for search engines for 20 years. Now we have to optimize for generative engines. I wrote about GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and why every site needs an llms.txt file. andrewcoyle.com/blog/generat…
Are we overestimating AI?
Did the AI chat agent unlock a surge of growth that’s hitting a plateau?
Was it the UI not the model?
We're living through The Great The Cognitive Load Crisis. Attention is scarce and most software wastes it.
