Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has put Makueni on the world stage after being recognized in Cape Town as a Global Champion against maternal deaths.
At the World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Mutula showcased how Makueni became the first county in Kenya to use heat-stable carbetocin, recording zero maternal deaths in 2023 and 2024. His administration also introduced calibrated drapes to end guesswork in delivery rooms.
The Governor was flanked by Chief Officer for Health Dr. Harvey Mulei and Ag. Director of Preventive and Promotive Health Dr. Stephen Mwatha, underlining the strong team behind Makueni’s success.
As the world applauds, Mutula reminded delegates that “real leadership is measured by lives saved.”

The County Government of Makueni has transformed its response to obstetric fistula by introducing routine services, free surgeries, weekly screening and home-based follow-up.
27 women received free surgery in the programme’s first week, while more than 120 women accessed fistula-related services by October 2023. The County has also established 38 fistula champions to challenge stigma and encourage women to seek care.
A powerful example of County-led healthcare that restores health, dignity and hope.
