Yaphet, the new album from @Curly_Castro and produced by @and_Locust is out now on Backwoodz Studioz. After a few years of focusing on his work with ShrapKnel, Castro has blessed us with a solo project and it’s well worth the wait. Yaphet finds the veteran MC in rare form throughout this blaxploitation roller derby of an album, and is joined by a who’s who of indie-rappers right out the gate. Literally. Castro delivered Yaphet way ahead of schedule, so this album has really been burning a hole in our speakers for a minute, and we are thrilled to be finally be able to share this with the world. Vinyl, CD, and cassette are all shipping now, and we also have a video premiere today for "Railroad Spikes", check everything out: mailchi.mp/backwoodzstudioz/…

Not everyone is going to be able to relate here, but when I was a kid, there were certain visitors who my mother would let it be known in advance; the house better be extra clean, and everyone had to be on their best behavior. We might even sit down in the living room, on the very furniture which you were not allowed to sit on at any other time. The sort of guest where my teetotaler parents might casually offer them a glass of wine like it was totally normal. Well, what we have today feels like that for me because Mike Ladd (@likemadd) is that guy when it comes to this indie rap thing of ours; his first album dropped the same year as Funcrusher Plus. He was doing collaborations with experimental jazz musicians when I was still figuring out how to write rhymes. So, please know, Mike Ladd is a guest of honor on this side of things, and that makes it even more exciting to announce his new album Nonechosen will be dropping on Backwoodz Studioz in November of 2026. Serengeti, one of hip-hop’s most singular and imaginative storytellers, returns to the expansive world of Kenny Dennis with KennyV. For more than a decade, @serengetidave has used his mustachioed, Chicago-born alter ego to build one of rap’s funniest, strangest, and most unexpectedly poignant character studies. 🥸Kenny is a blue-collar hero, family man, sports obsessive, aspiring entertainer, and endlessly unreliable narrator whose everyday victories, anxieties, grudges, and digressions have grown into a richly detailed mythology all their own. Across twelve tracks, #KennyV opens another chapter in that saga, balancing absurdist humor, intricate world-building, sharp wordplay, and genuine emotional weight. Serengeti’s conversational performances make even Kenny’s most surreal observations feel lived-in and deeply human, revealing new layers of the character while remaining accessible to listeners encountering him for the first time. Production comes from Backwoodz Studioz mainstays Messiah Musik, known for his work with Armand Hammer, billy woods, and Mach-Hommy, and Steel Tipped Dove, whose credits include Fatboi Sharif, Doseone, ShrapKnel, and Fat Tony. Together, they provide an unconventional backdrop perfectly suited to Serengeti’s unmistakable voice and unpredictable storytelling. Previously available digitally, KennyV is now available for pre-order from Backwoodz Studioz on vinyl, CD, and cassette. A distinctive addition to the Kenny Dennis canon and Serengeti’s celebrated catalog, these editions are essential for longtime fans, adventurous hip-hop listeners, and collectors of truly original independent rap. Quantities are extremely limited. Release date is October 30. Pre-orders are available now directly from Backwoodz [bwdz.net/kennyv], and limited quantities will also be available at retailers via worldwide distribution 🌐 from @rhymesayers / @secretlydistro. PRE-ORDER NOW 🥸 bwdz.net/kennyv
