This is a comprehensive, well-researched case for banning targeted advertising. It is so overwhelmingly a bad deal for privacy, consumers, and everyone but a few ad companies, like Google and Facebook, that ends up pocketing 99% of the pie. wired.com/story/why-dont-we-…

Ban targeted ads and you kill the incentive to pillage people’s privacy in the first place.

Every targeted ad is a privacy violation and constitutes the sale of personal data.

CA's privacy law went into effect yesterday. Its impact might not be immediate, but "as the mechanisms of the law get finalized...its impact could go a long way to determining whether the 2020s become the decade the US started taking privacy seriously." wired.com/story/ccpa-guide-c…

The 2000s made us marvel in awe from the progress brought by Facebook, Google, and Amazon.
The 2010s made us recoil in horror as they consumed our attention, sanity, and markets.
The 2020s is when we finally gather the courage to fight back.

Facebook and Google have both grown so fat and entrenched on industrial-scale abuse of privacy that real change appears unrealistic. That we are forever bound to have our privacy violated for the profits of targeted ads. But remember "it always seems impossible until it's done".

Every ad you see that was targeted using personal data is a privacy violation. Renting out your personal data is no better than outright selling it. Facebook and Google make more money than anyone through this regime of abuse. Thus they must face the bulk of our scrutiny.

Midwest tech ❤️

We need more of tech taking on strong local engagement. Leveling up cities all over the place, not just in a few overcrowded metropolises. And not just on account of a municipal handout, but because they actually care for and believe in that place.

Google and Facebook’s duopoly is a cancer upon the web. This report is from two years ago. Surely it’s gotten worse since. We went Facebook free at Basecamp a while back. It’s time to get serious about the second step: Google free. staltz.com/the-web-began-dyi…
