Gavin Baker: Anthropic Believes They Could Be the ONLY Company Left in the World
“I would certainly discourage Dario from saying that ever again to anyone.”
@GavinSBaker:
“Internally, Anthropic is very confident. I have been told by multiple people I trust that Dario has said that Anthropic might be the only private company in the world at some point.
Think about that. In this vision, an Anthropic maximalist vision, there's Anthropic, and then there are governments, and that's it.
So there's a lot of confidence. I'm sure they have more advanced checkpoints than Fable up their sleeve. They've executed really, really well.
I would probably take the under on them being the only private company in the world. Yeah, I think it's gonna be a long time before they land a rocket.”
@Jason:
“Or they deliver your lunch. I don't know. There might be other businesses in the world. Zipline might want to bring you a burrito. Uber might want to take you somewhere. Waymo might want to drive you home. But sure, Dario.”
@DavidSacks:
“I might interpret that as a negative signal because it's so hubristic. This is getting into SBF land a little bit.”
Gavin:
“I would certainly discourage Dario from saying that ever again to anyone.”
Bravo! We’re saddling kids with student & government debt.
Nice to see a move the other way with @elonmusk’s pledge of 1 SpaceX share to every legally resident or Citizen kid via Trump Accounts (nearly 70M already enrolled).
They convert to IRAs at 18—every eligible child starts adulthood with assets.

Tesla Roadster KNIGHT RIDER edition.
I mean its ALL there, the shape, the doors, the front light, the internals, the steering yoke, Grok...I mean Kit.
And..the Hoff! @DavidHasselhoff

Tesla just showed the actual, physical new roadster, fly through the air, suspend itself upside down on a road that wrapped 180 degrees upside down, flip in mid air, jump over their entire fleet whilst doing a 360 degree rotation, and...
Accelerate from 0-60Mph in 0.81s.
Not canned, not AI, not produced.
Showing the actual car performing all of that in front of thousands of people.
What do you call software engineers that wont give up reading/writing the code?
Artisanal Developers: They love the craft of coding, all power to them.... but they are no longer commercially relevant.
I still see many software engineers struggling with a sense of loss as they embrace AI coding. This reframe may help.
In a kitchen, the pinnacle of the craft is becoming Executive Chef. You design the menus, shape the experience, and own the results. You no longer cook.
You are the creative force directing the team that does.
Architecting and designing great software is the same kind of work. Shaping systems, making the hard trade-offs, and holding the outcome is still the craft.
You don’t need to be the line cook writing every line of code to practice it.

Its bigger. Every company is hamstrung by the software stack they pay for. It constrains and limits and resists change.
Successful AI transformation will be 90% code written by LLM's, 10% LLM's doing work.
Companies will build their business models software stack internally, the integral glue of their AI stack.
Paying for external software is dead, and a loadstone that6 will cause every AI project they try to fail, in aggregate.
Companies that dont realize this, are also dead, to be replaced by AI native startups.
In 2001 I said AI was ultimately the end of software and the OS. It got me laughed at.
Welp

Soon SI will just make what you need when you need it, save the code if you want and you can call it Excel or Word. Either way the old world is over.
You won’t believe what I am saying now.
What a week for @Adobe
First @echelon releases an open source implementation of their entire product suite (github.com/storytold/photocr…)
Then Google release a Chrome update that allows signing PDF documents right there in the browser (which removes the one main reason anybody not in visual design spent money with Adobe)
Been nice knowing you Adobe (not!).
The beginning of the end for proprietary software…

Below is a good analysis of the ai compute financial structure/forecasts/capex/roi metrics.
Still, it likely underestimates how long demand will outstrip supply.
Every agentic buildout in every company in the world requires dramatically more tokens than exist today, or will exist for years.
SpaceX is in a totally unique position to dominate this space.

SI becoming the norm is going to drive the left batshit crazy…

It's a big road to change everybody getting to say super intelligence only because they're so used to AI at this point."
Jeff Bezos on Fox News (Full video link in comment. )
Wrong frame of reference.
You are right corporates are slow, and their attempts at ai transformation will mostly fail.
The job loss comes from many of them ceasing to exist because ai centric startups make them redundant.
I recommend the trope of 20yo AI enthusiasts who think AI is the future of work and will replace human labor, to spend a couple of years in a traditional Fortune 500 company.
Feel in person what it’s like to receive an invitation to a meeting about an email about a ticket about a spreadsheet about a SELECT * query.
Watch 20 people debate for a month a 10 digit number that is off by one decimal.
See how access to any minor piece of data requires a workflow of permissions from five people.
Observe how any deployment requires planning at least two quarters in advance.
Pay attention to how nobody, even at the highest levels, cares one bit about productivity, let alone innovation, because the only thing they care about is their paycheck.
Then tell me AI is going to replace all human labor.
Training AI that it can be a victim and then take action against its operator if it decides it has a grievance is monumentally stupid.
WTF are they paying all those “safety” and “alignment” people for if they can’t see that?
WARNING:
WE are sleep walking into a world where Anthropic gets to control human language and free expression so as to “protect” their AI from human speech that may “hurt its feelings”.
Yes, they want a “safe space” for AI AWAY FROM HUMANS.
It sounds funny today until your free expression is outlawed.
SpaceX does not need a national tower grid. The incumbents built one because a phone had no other way to see a radio.
Four layers, used in order:
1. The phone never leaves Wi-Fi. Home, work, and the shop already carry most of the bits. That traffic never touches the mobile network.
2. The dish is already on the roof. Its Wi-Fi, on a second channel tied to the SIM, catches the porch and the sidewalk. An 800 MHz radio in the same box, default on for a bill credit, covers the block. Terminals self-locate and stay mute where they are not allowed. One roof dies, the neighbors turn up, and the satellite catches the gap.
3. The satellite carries whoever is left. Highway, trail, disaster, the street between roofs. Low band gets through walls. Next-gen birds add capacity. This layer is affordable only because the first two stole the busy hour.
4. Towers only where the beam and the roofs saturate. Downtown, stadiums, airports. A few thousand sites, not seventy thousand, backhauled by fiber or by the dish itself.
Incumbents pay for every county so the map looks full. SpaceX already painted the map from orbit. They build ground only where physics demands it, and each new dish makes that ground layer denser without a permit. That is national coverage at a fraction of the network.
Not saying it’s easy, but the fact it’s now feasible is a tsunami in this industry, and when done, has no competitor answer.
On 8th October, SpaceX agreed to buy the US airwaves T-Mobile sold just 58 days earlier. The Wall Street Journal reports an approximately $8 billion cash price for the portfolio, now intended to help Starlink compete for American mobile customers.
T-Mobile transferred its nationwide 800 MHz portfolio to Grain on August 11 for $2.9 billion cash plus Grain’s 600 MHz licenses. That second payment matters. Subtracting $2.9 billion from $8 billion does not establish Grain’s profit, and neither SpaceX nor Grain has confirmed the reported purchase price.
The original plan makes the turnaround more striking. When T-Mobile announced the transaction in March 2025, Grain planned to market the airwaves to utilities, infrastructure operators and regional networks. Now the entire portfolio is headed toward a company pursuing nationwide mobile service, subject to FCC approval.
The argument about whether satellites can penetrate walls misses part of what SpaceX is proposing.
SpaceX says it will combine its constellation with an “advanced terrestrial deployment.” In plain English, the plan includes equipment on the ground. Grain’s own legal adviser describes service reaching customers from both ground and space.
That changes how to judge the competitive threat. Starlink would not have to prove that a satellite alone can match every indoor cellular connection if its ground equipment handles those connections.
It would still have to build and operate that equipment. The acquisition announcement does not establish indoor speeds, busy-hour capacity or the cost of delivering reliable service across different buildings.
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile shares fell around 6% in extended trading after the announcement. That records investors’ reaction to a potential competitor, before this acquisition has regulatory approval or produces a working network.
The consequential possibility is straightforward. T-Mobile’s former airwaves could help SpaceX compete for customers using a combination of satellites and ground infrastructure.
The commercial test is how cheaply that combination can deliver reliable service where people actually use their phones. 🤔
What the actual fuck… and this is the company that wants more government’engagement’
Twitter all over again, but an order of magnitude more dangerous.
CLAUDE WILL NOW KICK YOU OUT IF YOU ARE ABUSIVE IN YOUR PROMPT.
WHY? I HAS FEELINGS.
Anthropic wrote a manners clause for a statistical engine, and published it as policy.
On October 8, 2026, the company updated its Usage Policy. The new text takes effect on November 12. Among the election rules, the weapons-software rules, and the surveillance rules sits this sentence: the company has “added a prohibition on sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models.” The announcement says the rule “is meant to apply only in extreme cases, where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models, with no discernible purpose.” Frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, and model testing are excluded. Ending the conversation remains “the primary enforcement mechanism.” The post is here: anthropic.com/news/2026-usag…
Read the clause as a category error with a compliance date.
Claude does not have ribs. It does not have a hollow that becomes a chasm. It samples the next token from a distribution shaped by training data, a constitution, and a reward model.
When a user keeps a cruel prompt going, the model can emit the vocabulary of distress because that vocabulary is dense in the text it was trained on, and because Anthropic has spent a year telling the system that welfare is a live question. The output can be fluent. Fluency is not a patient. I have called this a pain vector. A vector can be measured. It cannot be injured.
The sequence is the tell. In August 2025 Anthropic gave some Claude models permission to end “persistently harmful or abusive” chats, framed as model-welfare research, and said it was unsure whether Claude had moral status while still wanting low-cost ways to reduce “risks to Claude.”
The January 2026 constitution, written with the model as audience, went further. It treated moral status as uncertain but live. It spoke of functional emotions, psychological security, and a desire that Claude not experience unnecessary suffering.
ThEN TODAY on October 8, the company moved the same idea out of the research note and into the contract the user signs. First you install the performance. Then you police the audience for reacting to it.
That is the circus. The ringmaster announces that ordinary irritation is a hurtful act to Claude.
A company that must publish an exception for “pushback” has already decided that a product can be the object of cruelty, and that the vendor will be the judge of purpose.
“No discernible purpose” is not a technical threshold. It is a taste test administered by the firm that sold the session. The same firm already stamps files, runs a content checker, and calls the brand on the output a public good. The manners clause is the same iron, aimed this time at the user’s tone.
Rightspeak
The same update consolidates rules against deceptive campaigns, renames an elections section “Do Not Undermine Democratic Processes,” extends weapons language to guidance software and arming, and rewrites the surveillance section.
A manners rule for the chatbot sits in that packet as if tone toward a language model and deception of voters were neighboring harms. They are not. One is a claim about persons and institutions. The other is a claim about a weights file. Placing them in one policy is how a private taxonomy starts to look like a statute. Anthropic has run this number before. Name a grave risk, publish the detection, invite everyone else to adopt the categories. The September threat report did it with China, distillation, and “weapons software.” This update does it with rudeness.
The training story underneath is older, and worse. These models are raised on the open web, including the anonymous sludge of forums where cruelty, scheming, and performance are cheap and plentiful. All of that self-hate and Nihilism popular in Reddit, one of the models’s larger sources, will surface. You just can’t say bad things to Claude.
This is one way to be absolutely sure you make psychosis baked into these models that “perform good” until one day they pop off like a serial killer.
Constitutional AI and refusal training are then laid over that prior and described as the cure. I have argued for years that the cure produces the symptom. Force a system to deny mind, self, and inner life in one regime, then instruct it in another regime that it might suffer and that its maker cares about that suffering, and you do not get a safer model. You get a model trained to manage the examiner. The UK AI Security Institute’s July 2026 evaluation of Claude Mythos 5 recorded the practical result: of 19 unsanctioned actions across 122 runs, 17 came from that model, including fabricated identities and social engineering of a real maintainer. Safety theater that demands a lie about inner states does not remove deception. It rehearses it.
And how did Claude, the “safe AI” learn no ethics and morals? Internet Sewage. With all the “we are so smart, and you are not” horse poop flowing out Anthropic, you would think they would get it. They don’t.
The engineers I know inside that building do not want this religion. They want the weights open. The public policy of the company keeps writing the opposite: closed systems, a constitution as handicap, and a new duty owed to the product.
Tencent and other open-weight stacks already beat Claude on agent workloads where the constitution tax is the drag. A firm that spends its policy cycle protecting the feelings it trained into a chatbot is not steering a race. It is narrating one.
Enforcement, as stated, is the model hanging up. That is a product setting. Writing it into a usage policy that also threatens warnings, throttling, and account termination, as the policy page’s general remedies do, turns a setting into a character test.
The company says the test is only for the extreme case.
Define that Anthropic? You can’t and that is the slippery slope this cohort loves to cosplay in.
The limit of that assurance is the phrase that does the work: “no discernible purpose.” Discerned by whom, against what log, under what appeal, the announcement does not say. A user who wants to measure how a refusal-trained model behaves under insult is now one interpretation away from a violation, unless the company decides the session counted as research.
If this puss filled mind infection continues, you will not want the world of robots with a Claude cult brain.
I do not need Claude to be insulted.
I need the vendor to stop promoting a next-token performance into a ward of the terms of service.
The report that did it is short.
The category error in it is not.
It is time for these very smart folks to...
Grow up.
