In the AI discourse, there's this very weird dynamic. People seem to think that enforcing current laws against powerful people is impossible, but also that we need more laws. Why? What's the point of regulation if we can't enforce? This whole thing makes no sense.

Society propagates deceitful messages like "everyone is smart" or "everyone is beautiful." A tell of how people have been trained to measure human worth. It doesn't even occur to them to say "You can have worth and dignity and value, regardless of how smart or beautiful you are."

Thanks to @DanHaarColumns for the chance to share views of @OperationsInc and our clients / followers. We need @GovNedLamont to help offices reopen via more complete guidance for Landlords. We also need to know the protocol for when an employee tests positive. Answers...please.

This explains so much of what's wrong with algorithmic decision making today. Procurement might make sense if algorithms merely implemented clearly-specified rules, but it doesn't work like that. Policy decisions are left up to proprietary systems, especially when ML is involved.
Deirdre Mulligan: governments are adding algorithms with the same process they use to buy chairs, when they are actually deciding how to operationalize policy. ML should not go through procurement.

Aside from being largely bullshit, this claim is so insulting to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who ***trained their foreign replacements.***
#APFactCheck: Sen. Elizabeth Warren said that the "principal reason" for losing jobs has been bad trade policy. Economists mostly blame those job losses on automation and robots, not trade deals. apne.ws/xAPs1P1

Overheard: "I know we have the most money to spend, but if marketers could put the 50+ demographic on ice floes and push us out to sea, they would." Thinking of you, @AdContrarian Me too (except for the money part). :-)
