Regarding China’s newly proposed restrictions on exporting sensitive technologies, including certain frontier AI models, I think I saw more people freaking out on X than in China. But then, of course, the algorithm is probably more likely to feed me those people.
If you understand China’s overall strategy, I don’t think you should interpret this as an attempt to kill open source. What China wants is greater control over strategically important technologies while encouraging their adoption around the world. Those two goals aren’t contradictory.
The government has made it pretty clear that it wants Chinese AI products and services to expand internationally. API access, SaaS, and lightweight on-device deployments are explicitly excluded from the proposed foundation-model export controls. Even for certain restricted technologies, including new open-source releases, it’s proposing simplified licensing procedures that could make exporting relatively straightforward.
Where things get complicated is with the core technology itself, including potentially model weights, training techniques, and transfers of intellectual property or ownership. Certain frontier models could face additional scrutiny based on their size, training compute, or performance. Exactly how these rules will apply to new open-weight releases remains an important question, although I personally expect more scrutiny of the underlying know-how than of the weights themselves.
My bigger hypothesis is that China is establishing this regulatory framework before it really needs to use it aggressively, at least when it comes to AI. It’s setting up the ability to exercise greater control in the future, when Chinese AI may be in a much stronger competitive position.
Right now, China hasn’t established a decisive overall lead in frontier AI, so it has strong incentives to keep its ecosystem relatively open. That helps Chinese developers catch up, accelerate innovation, and encourage global adoption. And China isn’t promoting open source simply out of generosity. The more widely Chinese models are used, the more commercial opportunities and influence Chinese companies can build around them.
That’s why I’d be surprised if the eventual rules were designed to broadly discourage Chinese companies from open-sourcing their models. Being overly restrictive would undermine much of what China is trying to accomplish.
Of course, there are legitimate national-security concerns, particularly around AI technologies that could enable cyberattacks or threaten critical infrastructure. China wants its AI capabilities to spread globally, but that doesn’t mean it wants unrestricted transfers of every underlying technology.
And frankly, allowing dangerous AI capabilities to proliferate without safeguards would be no bueno for world peace, or world stability.
Since start of Iran conflict, Helium px has tripled. This has led to US increasing He export by 70%. US is the global dominant He supplier.
Qatar share of Helium import into China shrunk to 6.5% by Aug while Russia increased to 63% & US increased to 20%.
The actual $ amt of import did not change much, which means China is importing significantly less qty in He than 2025.
He supply is tight & certain industries that do not absolutely need Helium likely has to adapt to new px w/ far lower demand.
Also, it appears to me that Russia's Amur plant is filling in China's supply issues & longer term Qatar share will permanently shrink. Russia was always the lowest cost supplier. Given the geopolitical concerns w/ Qatar supply, the closeness of Russia is likely to make it the supplier of choice for China's electronics industry.

Around four years ago, I was discussing the war in Ukraine with an Irish journalist on a balcony in Berlin. I told him that the West miscalculated and that NATO countries could not, in the long run, resolve the contradictions that this confrontation would unleash. Cracks would soon begin to emerge, and that, surely, was part of the calculus.
He seemed aghast. He repeated that mantra — apparently mandatory for Western journalists — that Putin hoped for his “full-scale invasion” to succeed in three days, that NATO had now dramatically expanded its border with Russia, and that the West was more united than ever. I told him that we should speak again in a few years.
We never did, but I wonder what he would say now. It is breathtaking how deeply Europe has transformed since then. The loss of affordable energy, now exacerbated by the NATO-backed US-Zionist war in Iran, is decimating its industrial base. In Palestine, Europe supported a colonial genocide to the hilt, destroying its political standing on the world stage.
With two pillars of its hegemony in tatters, Europe’s final recourse is militarization. It has launched a rearmament drive comparable in scale to that which preceded the First World War, it is actively toying with the apocalyptic danger of nuclear war, it is decimating the social democratic compact to pay for the transition to a war economy, and it is deploying extreme violence against its citizens to secure these policies.
European capital is on the back foot, and the objective conditions for fascism’s return to the political center are in place. It is clearer than ever that this crisis is only going to deepen, producing irreparable fractures in the edifice of Western power.

I'm watching a leviathan slowly eat its own body parts, without shame, possibly without realising it themselves. Yet my concern is, are we ready?
BREAKING: Donald Trump is now considering a major attack against Iran, reportedly discussing plans with senior advisers, Pentagon officials and the CIA to strike Kharg Island — the nerve center of Iran’s oil industry, handling roughly 90% of its crude exports, per Erem News, cited by Israel Hayom.
The proposed targets include oil storage tanks, pipelines, tanker-loading facilities and military sites, aiming to cripple Tehran’s main oil-export lifeline and force it to accept U.S. demands on its nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz before the November 3 midterms.
Simultaneously, the U.S. has issued urgent security and travel alerts across the Middle East — from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE to Iraq, Lebanon, Oman, Yemen, Iran and Israel — warning Americans of potential missile and drone attacks, airspace closures and flight cancellations, and urging them to consider leaving immediately.

another big reason why a revolution wont happen in america is because everyone is subjected to intense zero-sum status games throughout their lives
american social life is increasingly succumbing to involution
& the obsession with meritocracy only reinforces involution to the point of degrading the broader social fabric
you can’t organize as a class if all sense of solidarity towards your fellow citizen is muted in various fields of competition

WTH? And the Japanese tweets keep blaming China for this fire? 🤦♂️
Turns out it was Japanese executives from a company in Mongolia who sparked it by illegally entering a protected reserve during fire season to fish for an endangered species.

This month I helped harvest over 100 tons of cotton in Manas County of Xinjiang. I oversaw the whole process, from making sure the cotton was ready to harvest, to booking the John Deer harvester, arranging the the transport of the cotton bales and much more. Full vid coming soon!
I tested Space Bunny extensively & it was not as good for my workflow as GLM-5.3 Flash or DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. I will check this out on OpenCode, but not expecting it to be as good as latest 4.1 + DSH.

🚢 There are only about 950 supertankers in the world, each carrying about 2 million barrels of crude. Energy analyst Rory Johnston warns that losing a couple a day to attacks around Hormuz "adds up very, very quickly."
Johnston, founder of Commodity Context, told Drop Site News’ Ryan Grim the attacks are getting more serious. Early strikes mostly holed double hulls, damage repairable in a week or two. Now drones are hitting engine rooms, which may take months. Of more than 110 attacks since the war began, three ships have sunk, two in recent weeks.
Shipping a barrel from the Gulf to China now costs $25 to $30, more than ten times the prewar rate, with tanker day rates of $1.3 to $1.5 million.
🔗 Watch our full interview, where Johnston explains why Trump's diesel deal with Putin is a "nothing burger" and why any relief in prices is unlikely until 2027.
