Hey @cursedconnector have you ever seen a 10 pin DIN connector? Know of a source for one today? No shroud, male. From a Wyse WY100 keyboard.
Here's a video I took of our setup form #VCFWest - 8000 Dandelion running Network Services 11.0, two 6085 Daybreaks running ViewPoint 2.0, 1100 Dolphin InterLisp-D, Dicentra sitting on top, and finally the Alto.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by - we had a great show!
Next weekend Josh and I will be giving a demo of Xerox systems at VCF West - every generation of computer hardware they sold form the Alto, to the Dorado, the Dolphin, Dandelion, and Daybreak. A rare chance to see the whole lineage in one place - working!
Got the van loaded today. See you at @vcfederation VCF west!
Here's the laser path on a 1981 Xerox 8040 Electronic Printer - the one sold with the Star office system. Note the helium neon laser - a modulator bends the beam. That's why there appear to be 2 beams in the photo. Light strikes the spinning polygon mirror causing it to scan.
Part 3 of the Xerox 8000 restoration is live: a look at the 8000 processor:

This is the same hardware as the 8010 Star, using the Wildflower architecture.
Part 2 of the Xerox 8000 restoration is live: An in depth look at the 8040 Laser Printer: youtu.be/BuxKkNWklvQ
Part one of my Xerox 8000 restoration series is live! youtube.com/watch?v=dRg0Kpde…
After adjustments, cleaning, and proper assembly the Xerox 8040 laser printer is able to produce test prints!
Here's a nice family photo. The server is the same hardware as an 8010 Star workstation, less the monitor and input devices.
Signs of life from the 1982 Xerox 8040 Laser Printer! This is what you would've gotten as part of the Star Office System. #vintagecomputing #XeroxPARC

Just about 17 years ago, a couple coworkers and I decided to put a decommissioned Dell PowerEdge 2650 on the roof. Why? Because we were curious, and it was to become scrap metal. We did absolutely nothing to weatherproof it, beyond setting it on two bricks, facing it away from the prevailing wind, putting a drip loop in the cabling, and using fiber networking so we wouldn't fry anything if it got zapped. Ran Linux, plotting its own sensor data via ipmitool, and presenting it via a web page served from the box itself. We put load on it using SETI@Home. It ran for about two months up there, even surviving 6" of snow, until a really gnarly thunderstorm drove water into the SCSI backplane and it shorted out. Continued running for a few more weeks, though, until not being able to write to disk was finally too much. Did not come back from a power cycle. Its hostname was Tevye, of course.

The earliest DOS source code was found on printer paper in Tim Paterson's garage so we've open sourced it on 86-DOS 1.00’s 45th anniversary! This is next-level software archaeology for study, preservation, and plain ol’ curiosity. Go dig in and learn how it was recovered! #DOS #RetroComputing

Converting COBOL to Java is expensive and risky, but at least it will run slower.
Social Security systems contain tens of millions of lines of code written in COBOL, an archaic programming language. Safely rewriting that code would take years—DOGE wants it done in months. wired.com/story/doge-rebuild…
