Using a simple conductance asymmetry metric, researchers disentangled coexisting spin, vibrational, and orbital excitations within a single cobaltocene molecule, potentially enabling new approaches for single-molecule quantum computing.

ALT A scientific schematic featuring a plot and 3D renderings of ball and stick chemical structures of cobaltocene. On the bottom left is a blue sphere with a black arrow through it that points up and to the right. On the top left is a red sphere with a black arrow through it that points down and to the left. In between them is a cobaltocene molecule. To the right is a blue curve depicting a differential conductance spectrum. Above and below the spectrum are green and red electron density lobes and atomic structures showing the vibrational and orbital excitations at different energy levels.

200 years ago M. Faraday discovered benzene, but we are still learning about it. Just published in @acsnano, we show that direct interaction over 1 nm orders a network of benzene rotors mounted on triangular platforms. @kieluni @CFMdonostia @ESIMproject pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.102…

These are fascinating systems showing the magic of porphyrins and how powerful on-surface synthesis can be to create new chemical compounds.
Finally, I want to thank everybody involved in this quite fruitful collaboration. Good job everyone!
From our side, the project required more than 1700 calculations and 1.1 million of CPU-hours. The last three articles have been published in #OpenAccess

Thrilled to share our new paper in @angew_chem!
We used on-surface chemistry to grow Fe- and Co-porphyrin nanotapes and explore their unique magnetic interactions! A great collaboration between @Empa_CH, @CFMdonostia, and @UAM_Madrid onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
