A commentator should be precise, insightful, witty, humorous, technical and should bring color to the commentary box. Most importantly should be neutral and not biased towards their team. They should know how to connect with the audience. There is a saying not all great cricketers make great coaches neither do they make great commentators. Wasim Akram, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, David Warner, Vernon Philander, Matthew Hayden, Mark Waugh, Aaron Finch, Kevin Pietersen, Waqar Younis, Justin Langer, Harbhajan Singh who are all greats of the game have made the commentary box an absolute bore fest and sadly do not know how to engage with the larger audience. I respect commentators like Ian Bishop, Mark Nicholas, Ian Smith, Pommie Mbangwa, Simon Doull, Mike Haysman, Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Dinesh Karthik, Mark Howard, Ricky Ponting, Jim Maxwell, Kerry O'Keeffe, Alison Mitchell, Shaun Pollock, Isa Guha and Ravi Shastri cause no bullshit from their end. They read the game beautifully and they are a viewer's/listener's delight. They know the art of engaging with the viewers. Harsha Bhogle was upon a time a very good commentator but hasn't been the same since the 2016 t20 WC. He has been forced to compromise and give false praise which makes him uncomfortable and his conscience knows it too. @commentryboomer
