Her wedding was canceled. So she invited 11 women she’d never met to Ireland to celebrate anyway.
And, remarkably, they showed up.
Bridget Devaney had been planning a romantic elopement along Northern Ireland’s spectacular coastline. But after her fiancé suffered a medical emergency, their relationship ended. The wedding was postponed, and Bridget was left trying to make sense of a future that had suddenly changed.
Then, in April 2026, an email arrived from her wedding photographer asking about the ceremony.
Bridget had a decision to make.
She could cancel the arrangements and put the experience behind her. Instead, encouraged by a friend, she came up with a wonderfully unconventional idea.
What if she invited women she’d never met to celebrate the wedding that wasn’t going to happen?
She posted an anonymous invitation online, asking women to join her for a week in Northern Ireland.
Hundreds expressed interest.
Eventually, 11 women from the United States, Canada and Wales signed up. Initially, they didn’t even know Bridget’s name or what she looked like.
And every woman had her own reasons for taking the chance.
Janae Pettit, a design consultant from Utah, was approaching her 40th birthday and struggling with feelings of loneliness and uncertainty about getting older. She decided the trip would be a gift to herself.
Shana Johnson, from Minnesota, loved traveling but found that many of her friends were occupied with families and relationships. The invitation offered something different.
In October, the women finally gathered in Northern Ireland.
They spent a week exploring the coastline, visiting historic landmarks, sharing experiences and getting to know one another.
Then came the day that should have been Bridget’s wedding.
The women dressed in beautiful gowns and gathered for a professional photoshoot among Ireland’s dramatic landscapes.
Photographer Rob Dight was astonished when he discovered that the women embracing, laughing and celebrating together had met only three days earlier.
There was no groom. No wedding ceremony. No marriage.
But Bridget had something she hadn’t expected when she first planned the trip.
Eleven new friends.
Weeks later, the women were still exchanging messages and making plans to see one another again.
What began as one woman’s canceled wedding had become an extraordinary gathering of women who might otherwise never have crossed paths.
