NAB Plans to Cut Up to 2,500 Jobs in Major Restructure National Australia Bank (NAB) has announced plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs, or approximately 6% of its workforce, by mid-2027. The bank expects up to 1,500 roles to be cut before the end of 2026. NAB said the restructure aims to simplify its operating model, reduce duplication and better align its workforce with growth and technology initiatives. Chief executive Andrew Irvine said customer-facing banking roles would not be materially affected. The bank also plans to significantly reduce its reliance on consultants and external contractors. NAB expects to record around A$300 million in pre-tax restructuring costs, with further details due in its full-year results announcement on 5 November. The bank cited challenging economic conditions, rising customer expectations, competitive pressures and rapid technological change as factors behind the changes. The announcement has drawn criticism from the Finance Sector Union, which raised concerns about employee workloads and the impact of the cuts. A governance expert also called for greater clarity on the potential role of artificial intelligence in the restructure. NAB has not directly attributed the job cuts to AI in its announcement. The move follows other workforce reductions across Australia's banking sector, including restructuring at ANZ and proposed job cuts at Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. Deep-Sea Mining Trial Disrupts Seafloor Microbial Ecosystems A study published in Total Environment Microbiology has revealed how deep-sea mining can disrupt microbial processes on the South China Sea floor. Researchers examined cobalt-rich rock extraction at approximately 1,300 metres below sea level. Water and rock samples showed changes in nutrient availability, particularly nitrogen and silicate. Genes involved in nitrogen fixation decreased, while those associated with denitrification and sulfate reduction increased during mining. Researchers suggested that sediment disturbance, increased turbidity and potentially lower oxygen levels may have contributed to these changes. However, the study did not specify the exact time between sample collection before and during mining. The findings highlight the need for further research into deep-sea mining's environmental impacts, particularly its effects on nutrient cycling and marine ecosystems. Climate Change Could Increase Toxic Mining Waste Risks Along Coastlines Climate change could increase the risk of toxic mining waste reaching coastal waters, threatening marine ecosystems, food quality and communities that depend on the ocean. A new analysis published in Earth-Science Reviews examines how rising temperatures, changing weather patterns and sea-level rise could worsen mining pollution over the coming century. Researchers compiled a global database covering 4,094 active mines, 28,563 inactive mines and 1,427 tailings storage facilities that could contaminate marine environments. Their findings indicate that nearly 293,000 kilometres of coastline worldwide face potential contamination from metal mining. The study identified six regions where overlapping climate hazards pose the highest risks: North America, South America, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, East Asia and Australia. Warmer conditions could increase erosion and thawing, while changing rainfall and wind patterns could carry mining waste into waterways or disperse dried waste into surrounding areas. The research also highlights the long-term risks from inactive mines. While tailings dam failures can release enormous quantities of waste in a short period, the gradual release of pollution from abandoned mines can continue for centuries or even millennia. Rising sea levels and storm surges could further disturb contaminated sediments, increasing the risk of metals entering marine food chains. Researchers recommend stronger environmental monitoring, improved mining waste management and remediation of contaminated sites. Measures such as stabilising polluted sediments, strengthening tailings dams and using vegetation that can tolerate contaminated environments could help reduce the risks. However, funding and accountability remain significant challenges, particularly for abandoned mines without an operating company responsible for cleanup. Bergbau Uses AI to Accelerate Mine Planning Bergbau is bringing artificial intelligence into mine planning with its new Planning Agent, designed to help mining engineers convert plain-language instructions into mine designs, production schedules and technical reports. During a training demonstration, the platform completed a workflow spanning block modelling, optimisation, design, sequencing, resource-constrained scheduling and reporting in approximately one working day. Conventional processes can take months. The Planning Agent allows engineers to refine layouts, investigate production delays, adjust scheduling priorities and compare alternative scenarios. It supports both underground and open-pit operations, while keeping designs and schedules accessible in familiar mining software for further inspection and review. Bergbau said its technology combines AI interfaces with specialised design tools, optimisation engines, mining knowledge and established workflows. Recurring tasks, including planning updates and reconciliation, can also be captured as reusable processes tailored to individual mine sites. The launch highlights how AI could help mining teams increase engineering capacity, streamline planning tasks and evaluate multiple scenarios more efficiently.
