In his latest article for Seatrade Maritime News, Mujtaba Arshad, Research Associate at @coecpec, argues that Gwadar’s strategic location alone cannot transform it into a major transshipment hub. The real test is whether global shipping companies establish regular and long-term services at the port. To compete regionally, Gwadar must attract anchor shipping lines, improve cargo-clearance efficiency, introduce targeted incentives, and develop reliable feeder connections with Karachi, the Gulf, Oman, and East Africa. Temporary cargo diversions may create opportunities, but Gwadar’s success will ultimately depend on whether shipping lines return week after week, year after year.
