Cobh Library will be running a new local history project over the coming months! We are inviting people with interesting keepsakes, mementoes, or artefacts, safely stored away in attics, cupboards, and drawers, to dig them out and tell us their story. In a town with such a rich and varied history as Cobh, there must be fascinating objects waiting to be rediscovered in homes across the island. Sharing the stories behind these items is important, not only for preserving family history but also for helping to piece together the wider history of the Lower Harbour itself. We welcome contributions from families who have lived on the island for generations, as well as those who have made Cobh their home more recently and brought a special object with them when they settled here. As part of the project, we will record a selection of the stories associated with these objects (audio only) and professionally photograph them. The recordings and photographs will form part of a new digital collection in Cork County Library Local Studies. Everything from a needle to an anchor will be considered! Recording sessions will take place on Saturday, 21 November, followed by a public Show and Tell event in January when participants will have the opportunity to share their objects and stories with the wider community.
