Refusing to teach the skill of bunting leaves hitters one dimensional, increasingly self outcome oriented, and limited in approach during slumps or at bats against dominant pitching.
Bunting increases hand eye coordination, plate/zone awareness, athleticism, and provides immediate barrel feedback.
It is a tool that can disrupt pitcher timing/flow/comfort, and defensive alignments which creates gaps and opportunities for more base hits. It gives you an offensive outlet if youâre being overpowered.

Tyler Walls with textbook push bunt. He shuffles up in the box to create a wider lane to bunt(more fair territory ) & then drop steps before stepping towards the second baseman. The goal is to firmly bunt the ball past the LHP. Itâs basically a running sac bunt. Herrin was not going to beat him to the base. His only option was to reach out & tag him from behind.

Pat Murphy says becoming a father completely changed the way he coached, and now every player he views and coaches as somebody elseâs son
âItâs got to be real, man. You canât just say it. Youâve got to live it. When itâs about your kid, when youâre raising kids by yourself, youâre clueless, man. You donât know what youâre doing. I donât know what Iâm doing. I didnât have that kind of, my parents were way older than me, so I donât know how to parent. I donât know what Iâm doing, but itâs really important to me.â
âAnd I started thinking about it like, every kid I coach is somebodyâs Kai Joseph. You know what I mean? Every kid I coach, they have parents who love their kid the way I love my kid.â
âWow, Iâve got to be a little mindful how I treat these guys. Iâve got to be a little mindful about, like, itâs my job.â
âThis profession isnât about the wins and losses. This profession is about, how do I impact this person?

If your HS coach(es) put on organized workouts in the offseason and you are not playing another sportâŚ. I encourage you to take advantage of this quality FREE training/practice.
You donât have to pay for training for it to be of value. If you take lessons, plan those for a time when you are not at your HS training. Then you get a double bonus. It should not be one or the other. Of course Iâm talking about players who love the game and are hungry to get better.
*** Footnote: not everyone is blessed to have quality coaches who give up their time in the off season to help other. But if you do, take advantage of it and thank them.

Some coaches donât realize that theyâre the problem. A player loses their love for the game, starts thinking about quitting. Then a new coach, a new culture & the spark returns. They didnât change, but their environment did. Coaches, you can be the reason they quit or love again.

Hopefully MLB owners are figuring out what separates the Brewers.
Culture.
and
The willingness to play a brand of baseball that does not create superstars.
Winning baseball requires players to do things that help the team more than themselves at times.
Players have to be willing to take a lot of check downs for the team.
Earlier in the season, Brewer manager Pat Murphy pulled rookie Cooper Pratt for not fully running out a hit.
Tonight, Murph pulled veteran William Contreras for not running out a ball to first.

The clubhouse matters.
Players do not have to be best friends.
But players have to respect each other enough to hold each other accountable.
The best organizations in baseball are not the best because of super duper player development.
They are the best because of dynamic accountability to inconvenient and strict standards.

FACTS
Teams that donât strike out at a high clip win more games. Simple as that. This is amplified at the college level â and even more at the high school level and below.
Once you get to two strikes, it becomes a team at-bat. Grind it out. Compete your tail off. Choke up, shorten up, widen out, move closer to the plate â whatever helps you execute your two-strike approach. Some call it their âB swing.â
Make the pitcher work.
We preach âlook fastball away and adjust,â but there are plenty of effective two-strike approaches. You have to experiment and find what fits your swing and mindset best.
A quality two-strike approach often leads to hard-hit balls. But even when it doesnât, the defense still has to field it, throw it, and catch it. Thatâs pressure.
A lot tougher to defend than a right turn back to the dugout.

Tough teams do 3 things better than everyone else:
1. They communicate
2. They hold each other accountable
3. They keep showing up, no matter what

As an AD, I constantly remind our athletes that commitment is being someone your teammates can count on whether you play a lot or a little. It is showing up when it is not convenient and choosing your team over yourself. Everyone wants to win. Commitment is doing what it actually takes to win.
