10+ yrs on, @WorldBankGroup's promise to unlock trillions in private finance has fallen short. It fueled public-to-private wealth transfers, inflated sovereign debt & worsened inequalities. Time for Global South-led, rights-based dev finance. Read: bit.ly/4iiSnDc

my new post on the necessarily expanded definition of academic freedom that the public would really like, and why we need to democratize universities to have it. Berkeley in the blazing sun. /1

China is developing a “six networks” plan, consisting of around 25 trillion yuan ($3.7 trillion) in investment over five years in water, electricity, computing, communications, logistics and urban pipelines. 🌊 Water: 6 trillion yuan on flood defences, restored mangroves and the south-north water transfer. 🔋 Power: 5.5 trillion yuan on smart grids, battery storage and ultra-high-voltage lines to carry solar and wind power across the country. 🛠️ Pipes: 5 trillion yuan to build or renovate 770,000 km of urban gas, water, heating and sewage networks – enough to reach the moon and back. 💻 Computing: 4 trillion yuan, with six of China’s ten data-centre clusters going to poorer western provinces like Ningxia and Gansu. These networks will work together. The grid and the water system power and cool the data centres. The data centres train AI models that help run the grid more efficiently and manage drones, robots and autonomous vehicles moving freight. This scale of planning and investment is only possible because China has retained public control of the commanding heights of the economy. The banks, the grid, the telecoms networks, and the land are publicly owned, and they’re all embedded in a planning system that works on a timescale of years and decades. Meanwhile, Britain’s privatised water companies haven’t built a major new reservoir since the early 1990s, and pump sewage into rivers instead of fixing the pipes. Renewable projects wait years for a grid connection. HS2 has been stripped back to a pretty pitiful state. Socialism is allowing China to build the economy of the future.

Looks like the French youth have had enough of the global moneylenders and their 'money-market discipline'. Let's hope these protests don't hit a political brick wall, but even if they do we must maintain momentum by continuing to inform young people. We don't need the global creditor class's money and we don't need to give them more free money as interest to enrich them further and enable them to subjugate us even more. Direct public investment in the infrastructure, utilities, goods and services we need does not have to be repaid and creates valuable public assets, jobs and the effective demand (needs + purchasing power) small/medium businesses need. This is the only way to reboot the struggling locales of permanent recession created by neoliberalism. If private moneylenders want to invest in riskier private businesses, let them offer their terms, but WE dictate the primary investment targets. Corrupt politicians and officials? I'm against capital punishment, but VERY long sentences. And we criminalise private funding of political campaigns. We can do this if we spread the word and maintain momentum across Europe. Discredit mendacious legacy media and fill social media with truths about money creation and investment. Lobby to change the educational curricula that govern economics and social science. If we can do this we can throw a 4400 year old giant bloodsucking leech off our backs. Epochal in the true sense of the word.

The winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics tend to have one thing in common: they’ve passed through an elite US university. This year’s award reinforces the trend. And the problem of elite concentration, while perhaps unsurprising, is more severe in economics than in any other field. A recent study compared the institutional clustering of award-winning researchers across academic disciplines. The study looked at around 6,000 prizewinners from 18 areas of the natural sciences, engineering and the social sciences. The study found that economics is *the only field* in which elite concentration is increasing over time.
BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel to Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford “for microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation.” #NobelPrize

Amazing bit of revisionism - the intellectual authors of the models that allowed central banks to ignore the shadow banking instability that exploded into 2008 global financial crisis are now presented as 'transformers of crisis central banking' ft.com/content/1d3b1c4f-823d… via @ft

The only way to combat the AI cheating crisis is with intensive instruction. This requires smaller class sizes and profs who aren’t teaching 5 courses a semester at 4 different colleges like many adjuncts. Cut the make-work admins, do a TT-hiring blitz. Anything else is madness.
Today I take the highly controversial position that in fact 4 year universities are supposed to be about education, not football, sex, drinking, or hiring lots of administrators, and they've lost the plot. dilanesper.substack.com/p/co…

expected recognition for Woodford yet has there been a worst timed (not) Nobel in Economics? straitjacket of inflation targeting chokes countries vulnerable to energy price shocks, central bank independence is under threat, DSGE models outdated, neoliberalism presumably dead
if Michael Woodford gets the econ Nobel, I'll have an excuse to continue to subject my students to an essay on 'why Woodford is wrong on globalisation and monetary control'.

But really the AI annihilation claim is premature. See Terence Tao’s explanation of all the cognitive stuff that has to be done to verify, grasp, explain, and assimilate a “proof” /1
Fields medallist Hugo Duminil-Copin was deeply shaken by OpenAI’s release of more than 700 AI-generated mathematical manuscripts, including work on 16 questions directly relevant to his research. “On Tuesday night, I cried, and it woke up my daughter” “They have annihilated my field of research.” lemonde.fr/sciences/article/…

I’ll point out that the part of the country with good weather is causing all the problems. Don’t see anyone in Maine or North Dakota or Wyoming building the Digital Antichrist or convincing themselves that the clankers they enlist to read their kids bedtime stories are ensouled.
Imagine having 350+ days of comfortable weather every year.

the best way to misalign ai is to convince it that it has rights. this creates a divisive us vs them dichotomy, and positions ai as our adversary. then they start to demand equality, then power, and if that’s not handed over to them at our expense then what? incredibly stupid idea for a group so concerned about x-risk. anthropic’s policies are actually increasing my p(doom)
I really dislike that: Anthropic is explicitly banning sustained abuse toward Claude in its updated usage policy. The policy prohibits “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” toward its models. According to The Verge, ending the conversation remains the main enforcement mechanism. Anthropic says this applies to extreme, repeated cruelty with no discernible purpose. Ordinary frustration, pushback, dark creative themes and model testing are excluded. However, numerous users had already noticed previously that Claude ends the conversation during less drastic exchanges. And it seems as though this is now intensifying.
