generally, i think the "thjazi is suspicious or secretly evil or not really altruistic" stuff is not only unsupported by the story thus far, but also mostly just reads like another "i bet the twist is that the good guys were actually bad", and i find it really uninteresting.

i don't really think this is what happened, though. brennan specifically says that thjazi can only reach out to occtis because they're in a barrow and occtis is casting detect magic, and thjazi is literally grafted to julien. he can only show up under very specific circumstances.
