Economists and politicians love to say, “Immigrants from this low-trust country have high salaries; therefore, they are good for the economy,” but the same argument could be made about the success of psychopaths.
Psychopathy is adaptive in a frequency-dependent fashion. The fewer psychopaths there are in a human system, the more adaptive psychopathy is because victims don’t suspect it as much. Make the system full of psychopaths, and everyone’s performance gets worse.
In the same way, low-trustworthiness immigrants tend to do reasonably well in the high-trust West. Conversely, when together in their ancestral homelands, they tend to live amid corruption and poverty. Individual performance is insufficient proof of collective benefit.
The question is not merely how individuals perform within a given system, but how they affect the systems they inhabit. People see 600hp and automatically assume the car is more fun.
Not always.
A lightweight 250hp car with good steering, a decent gearbox and a balanced chassis can feel way more alive than a heavy 600hp car.
You can actually use the power. You can push it through corners. You can enjoy the engine without immediately doing stupid speeds.
The 600hp car might win the drag race.
But the smaller car might be the one you remember after the drive.
Super important point, that I’d failed to consider.
The Heritage American debate isn’t just about severing your connection to the American past.
The more sinister idea is that what you do today carries no inheritance forward.
Serve your country. Build something. Sacrifice. Endure. Die for it.
Then be told your descendants have no special claim to your story, no right to take pride in your sacrifice, no deeper connection because of what you gave.
Once you convince a people that inheritance, lineage, and posterity mean nothing, you’ve weakened one of the oldest reasons men sacrifice for a future they’ll never live to see.
That is fertile ground for any system that wants loyalty transferred from family and inheritance to the state.
