To artists, 1. I'm not going to hit you with the same old tired advice like "no caffeine after 2 p.m." to stop you from stressing over insomnia. Anyone knows that, and besides, caffeine can actually be a good boost for artists like us. Here's what I really want to tell you: it's incredibly rare to die just from not sleeping. In fact, if you're in your 20s or 30s, you're pretty much guaranteed not to die just because you missed a few nights of sleep. The stress you put on yourself over not sleeping is way more dangerous than the actual sleep loss. The health problems triggered by that stress are what could actually be life-threatening. 2. Look, no matter how bad your insomnia gets, you WILL sleep eventually (unless you have fatal familial insomnia, but your chances of having that are lower than hitting the lottery three times in a row). That's true no matter how many stimulants you throw at it. Even if you're downing massive amounts of coffee day and night, your brain will eventually force you to crash just to keep you alive. You can't beat this with willpower. 3. If you can't fall asleep at night, just get out of bed and read a book or do a relaxing hobby. Instead of tossing and turning all night getting stressed out, you're much better off distracting yourself and thinking, "I'll pass out eventually." Like I said, dying purely from a lack of sleep is practically unheard of, and if you stay awake long enough, your brain will eventually force you to sleep.
