Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor’s anticipated Gaza documentary 'NAZA' has landed at the Venice Film Festival and the reviews are coming in. Indiewire gives the film an A score: “A documentary exposing the brutal machinery of modern genocide, “NAZA” gets its name from a euphemistic acronym casually employed by Israeli intelligence. It refers to the number of civilians designated “Nezek Agavi” or collateral damage in an air strike — which is to say, before an air strike. The title is also an onomatopoeia: the film may be journalistic in origin, but its cinematic effects are downright nauseating. Over a mere 80 minutes filmed on rooftops in Tel Aviv, the Israeli half of the collective behind West Bank land-grab doc “No Other Land” — directors Rachel Szor and Yuval Abraham — interview anonymous IDF sources who detail their methodology in drawings and words. Oscar-winning Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor hit the Venice Film Festival on Thursday with bombshell late competition addition 'Naza.' Based on interviews with 24 Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers, the documentary exposes the AI, phone surveillance and crude points-based systems deployed by the Israeli military in Gaza to decide targets, Hamas-related or otherwise, and then take them out in their homes regardless of whether children and other family members are likely to be killed in the strike as well. The title 'Naza' is taken from the Israeli military’s Hebrew acronym to describe each individual that could die when tallying up an estimated death-toll ahead of a strike.
