As mega-dairies continue expanding across the country, policymakers face a choice about the future of the dairy industry: do we want a few, massive, national operators to control dairy production, or do we want to maintain dispersed, family-scale dairy farms?

A national dairy business, Riverview, is building massive farms upwards of 60x larger than the average U.S. dairy farm. Farmers, environmentalists, and rural organizers in MN are fighting against risky industry consolidation and asking for policy action foodandpower.substack.com/p/…

Tens of millions do not make enough and cannot get by without direct public assistance or, worse, predatory credit like payday and title loans. A universally affordable future requires the politically difficult but urgent work of reining in the oligarchs. dissentmagazine.org/online_a…

Most politicians say that they want to help people afford their lives, but what really matters is how. For @DissentMag, @sandeepvaheesan and I argue that any "affordability" agenda must challenge corporate pricing power, not worker power. dissentmagazine.org/online_a…

Meanwhile food corporations across meat, eggs, sugar, even frozen french fries, have been credibly accused of colluding to restrict output, share sensitive information, and rig price indexes to raise prices and profits. Policymakers should police this corporate abuse, not workers

Lower prices is just one side of the affordability equation, fair wages is the other. We present a holistic vision of affordability that includes corporate regulation, public investment in & provisioning of essentials, and policies to raise labor income dissentmagazine.org/online_a…

We’re living in a period of excess business pricing power, not overbearing workers. As we seek solutions that systematically help all people meet their needs, we can learn from when the country last faced a sustained affordability crisis in the 1970s. dissentmagazine.org/online_a…

Taylor Farms and other large produce corporations have long exerted political power to weaken food safety regulations. The consequences are now hitting home in the largest foodborne illness outbreak in three decades. @clairekelloway barnraisingmedia.com/the-big…
