This is where social democracy fails. Electoralism isn't some neutral terrain where the working class can contend with the capitalists on equal footing. As long as the institutional and political power of the capitalists is left unbroken, they will always win sooner or later.
this is exactly why democracy and right-wing populism is so bleak. Lula successfully brought down poverty, unemployment, food insecurity and still lost because of the massive bourgeoisie media apparatus and evangelicalism. the people have been herded towards the reactionaries

Ok, we now have the actual text of the Greenland deal (whitehouse.gov/briefings-sta…), so we can say how it compares to the existing 1951 arrangement and who, between Trump and Denmark, lied the most in their framing of it. Long story short - which may surprise some - the Danes lied the most: Trump is pretty much correct in saying that this new deal grants the US control of Greenland. Let's look into what changed compared to the 1951 deal. 1) This is now a permanent arrangement: whereas the existing 1951 deal only lasted as long as NATO existed, this one "does not have an end date and may only be amended by mutual consent." It even survives a hypothetical future independence of Greenland: in that event, Denmark and Greenland must ensure that the independent Greenlandic state "affirmatively assume[s] all of the rights and obligations of the Kingdom of Denmark specified in this Agreement." 2) In the 1951 agreement, the US could set up bases only where both governments agreed, and only on the basis of NATO planning. The new deal locks in three bases: the US can "modernize and expand its activities" at Pituffik, its only base in Greenland until now, and "shall be allowed to establish an additional Defense Area at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig." Further bases beyond these 3 can be justified by the defense of "the American continent," a US interest rather than a NATO one. Also, quite subtle but this is interesting: Article IV(iii) says that "the United States may establish additional defense areas in Greenland" and that consultations are then held "to decide implementation details based on mutual agreement." What this means is that the principle of a new base is automatically granted and only the implementation details require agreement. Article VII also gives the US "the right to raise concerns regarding construction, or change of use" of any building near a US base, after which the parties decide together what to do. Which means that the US has a say over civilian planning around its bases. 3) On US military movement across Greenland, the wording change between the 1951 agreement and this new one is quite funny. The 1951 text said (Art. V(3)): the US "may enjoy... the right of free access to and movement between the defense areas through Greenland, including territorial waters, by land, air and sea," but only "in accordance with general rules mutually agreed upon and issued by the appropriate Danish authority in Greenland." The new one says: "the United States of America shall enjoy... the right of free access to and movement between the Defense Areas through Greenland, including the Territorial Waters, by land, air and sea." That's it: "May" becomes "shall," and the US military movement no longer has to follow rules "issued by the appropriate Danish authority in Greenland." The US also gets something new on top: "undersea access to and movement within the Territorial Waters," i.e. submarines. 4) Non-NATO exclusion: non-NATO states are barred from military installations or a persistent presence in Greenland unless all three parties approve, giving the US an effective permanent veto. The 1951 deal had no equivalent clause. 5) Investment screening: this is entirely new. "States or investors from a state that is not a member of NATO, a NATO partner, or an EU member state" (i.e. Russia, China, India, the Gulf States, etc.), "shall not be allowed to have (i) control, (ii) significant influence, or (iii) access to non-public information...within Particularly Sensitive Sectors or Activities in the territory of Greenland (including the Territorial Waters), unless agreed between the Parties." Again, it basically means that the US has a permanent veto over who can invest in strategic sectors in Greenland, as far as non-NATO or EU states are concerned. 6) Lastly, in stark contrast with the 1951 deal, the framing of the deal changes significantly: this new deal is largely framed around the US. The 1951 agreement existed only "for the benefit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization." The new one lists the defense of "the American continent" as an objective, celebrates "the irreplaceable role" of the United States military as well as "the United States' indispensable historical and ongoing contributions to the security and defense of Greenland," and names the establishment of Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defense system as a key goal. So, to sum up: - The US secured a permanent military foothold that even an independent Greenland would inherit whether it likes it or not - The US now has veto power over any non-NATO military presence in Greenland, and over who can invest in its strategic infrastructure and resources (beyond NATO and the EU) - Denmark signed away its say over the principle of new US bases, with only the right to discuss the "implementation details" - Danish authorities no longer set the rules for US military movement across the island - And all of it is now justified by the defense of "the American continent" I don't know in which universe this even remotely "recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination," as Danish PM Mette Frederiksen put it (stm.dk/en/press/press-releas…). Yes, the preamble of the text cynically "reaffirms" Danish sovereignty but, in my book, when you let a foreign country put bases on your soil, move its troops without following your rules and veto who else can come in, in perpetuity, after it spent two years threatening to take you by force, the word for that is anything but "recognized sovereignty" 🤷
Looks like what happened was: Trump: "We're going to buy Greenland!" Denmark: "Absolutely not, Greenland is not for sale! But you can have it for free" (I'm aware that Denmark is saying they kept "sovereignty" over it, but not sure what that word means when another country has permanent veto power over who can invest on your territory and occupies the place militarily)

One of the biggest successes of imperialist propaganda was making imperialism invisible to western audiences. Hating Russia, Iran, China and the DPRK is considered a humanitarian stance, instead of belligerent chauvinism that serves western capital.

Only in a country where the left’s politics are completely consumed by celebrity culture can a government official who voted to fund the Iron Dome, Israel’s most important technology in its ability to wage genocide with impunity, moral grandstand and pretend she’s less complicit in said genocide and the crackdown on free speech than some D-list singer. Let’s be very clear: the reason we’re even in a wave of brutal McCarthyism—where artists are canceled for saying Free Palestine and Palestinians are snatched up by ICE—to begin with is because an administration that *she* served as the sheepdog and told us to keep voting for wanted to commit genocide without Columbia students yelling at them for it.
🗣️ Rep. AOC tells @hicharliecotton she is boycotting Ed Sheeran because she says he's complicit in Robert Kraft and other stadium owners' efforts to silence Macklemore.

An emotional day for The Sameer Project team when we opened the desalination plant on September 10th! Support our work: chuffed.org/project/help-us-… After long hours of tears and sweat, we managed to open a desalination plant that provides a new source of clean water in Gaza. With God’s grace and your material support, we were able to do it. This desalination plant will help us save costs on providing water and we will also provide our partner organizations with free water to distribute. Working in community is a key pillar of The Sameer Project. So this is not our success, this is the success of mutual aid groups in Gaza. To operate the plant, we will need around $1,500 per day and we will be able to produce at least 150,000 liters of fresh water with that. The Sameer Project still needs your support to operate the desalination plant so please commit to a small amount monthly to sustain this important work. Our Food & Water Campaign link is here: chuffed.org/project/help-us-… Other ways to donate include: paypal.me/mahertali (Paypal option, please make sure to add a message saying "WATER") account.venmo.com/u/Maher-Al… (Venmo option, please make sure to add a message saying "WATER")

The ruins of the once vibrant town of Aitaroun. I’ve spent a lot of time in Aitaroun over the last two years. The warmth of the people who live there is unparalleled. Seeing this footage is absolutely devastating. The original video is almost five minutes long; the drive through the whole town. It has been erased. This is the Israeli policy of scorched earth. Israel has been systematically destroying towns and villages in Lebanon. This is an act of genocide. Genocide is defined under Article Il of the 1948 UN Genocide Convention as any act committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group. One of the five acts is “deliberately imposing destructive life conditions.” More than 65 towns and villages in Lebanon are still under Israeli occupation and are undergoing daily illegal civilian home and infrastructure demolitions.

No, a lot of very poor people are going to suffer horrifically for the crimes of a system they have no power within whilst idiots crow about abstract "humanity" learning "lessons" and the bourgeoisie get on a-ok.
Humanity is going to learn a very hard lesson about mother nature being more powerful than technology this year

BREAKING: Israel just bombed a water desalination plant in northern Gaza. Not a military base. An essential infrastructure built to provide water to civilians suffering through an extreme water crisis. Gaza is running out of water. This is an act of genocide.

Canada won’t do that though, because though Canada protests against US impositions on itself to limit its sovereignty— it aids the US in pushing those exact impositions against other states in the Caribbean, Latin America, on the African continent, and throughout Asia.
This would be a good time for Canada to ship oil to Cuba.

"We will not stop until our demands are met. We will continue the struggle." Production lines ground to a halt across Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan, Asan, and Jeonju plants in South Korea on Friday as workers staged an eight-hour strike over stalled wage negotiations. This was the union's first full-day stoppage in a decade and marks a significant escalation following the 16th round of talks that occurred on August 18. Those talks ended without resolution. While Hyundai has proposed an 89,000 won ($64) monthly base pay increase and a performance bonus of 350% of monthly salary, these still fall short of the union’s demands. Workers are calling for higher wages commensurate with the company’s profitability, retirement linked to the state pension eligibility age, and the reinstatement of dismissed union members. Workers are already planning four-hour partial strikes on August 24 and 25.

After the US insurance giant AIG helped tank the American economy in 2008 with its reckless gambling and accounting frauds, the chairman of AIG, Maurice Greenberg, filed a $55 billion lawsuit against the federal government for not giving him a big enough bailout -- and won.

China refused to bail out the Evergrande CEO because he crossed the three red lines established by Xi Jinping. These three red lines are a practical application of dialectical materialism, which the Communist Party of China employs to arrest unchecked capitalism. Here is what they entail:

you see this red splotch covering Gaza? it is made of red dots, each single dot represents an airstrike under the Biden’s administration. it took two years of tremendous relentless unforgiving bombing and 4 US vetos to complete. you can’t regret your way out of this.
