Thank you, @EdwineBarasa and @DavidMukanga (@gatesfoundation), for this strong call.
In my recent @Devex article devex.com/news/do-we-have-th…, I emphasize: we need bold country ownership, malaria programs embedded in national systems, and strengthened local research capacity. Only then can we truly end malaria.

Malaria, malnutrition and pneumonia often overlap in child deaths, yet health systems still treat them separately.
Experts say this fragmentation is costing lives.

On #WorldMalariaDay, under the theme “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.” — My new opinion in @Devex: “Do we have the courage to embed #malaria elimination in national systems?”
The era of heavy donor dependence is ending. The current funding crisis is painful — but it is also our best opportunity to finally transition to strong, sustainable, country-owned health systems.

A powerful & timely call from Dr @DonaldKaberuka: the establishment of the African Medicines Agency marks a defining moment for Africa’s health sovereignty and pharmaceutical independence. Honoured to join him today for an introductory meeting with AMA Director General Dr @mimi_darko. The journey ahead is ambitious, but with collective leadership, sustainable financing & continental coordination, AMA can become the cornerstone of a truly self-reliant African health architecture. “ Investing in resilient local systems and ensure accountability for results” To the point. Thank You Ambassador. Highly appreciated.
A very well elaborated and highly insightful article! I would emphasize the critical need for prioritising cost-effective, equity-driven interventions, strengthening primary care and prevention, and using data and digital tools to maximize impact with fewer resources. Effective transformation of the global health system also demands country-specific assessments to identify system bottlenecks so actions are driven by real data, alongside stronger coordination across governments, donors, and the private sector to reduce duplication, invest in resilient local systems, and ensure accountability for results.
As always, grateful for a rich conversation with @CatyFondsmond of @GlobalFund on the evolving funding landscape—and what it means for African leadership & country ownership. Our shared focus: how #Africa can use every dollar by boosting efficiency &
mobilizing domestic financing, while countries lead & learn from one another. We believe #Africa can—and must—own and deliver its #health agenda, strengthen results, & build long-term resilience 4 healthier, more productive populations and sustained growth. #AfrikaKwanza #GlobalHealthReform

🦟 MALARIA EPIDEMIC EARLY WARNING – WESTERN KENYA HIGHLANDS (NOVEMBER 2025)
@MeteoKenya 🇰🇪, in collaboration with @MOH_Kenya and @KEMRI_Kenya, has released the Malaria Epidemic Early Warning Prediction System for the Western Kenya Highlands, covering Kakamega, Kisii, and Nandi Counties.
This data-driven system integrates climate and environmental indicators—including temperature and rainfall trends—to forecast the likelihood of malaria epidemics and support early health action.
📊 Forecast Summary (Nov–Dec 2025):
🌿 Kakamega: High Risk of Malaria Epidemic (above 30% threshold)
🌿 Kisii: No Risk
🌿 Nandi: No Risk
The results emphasize how climate information can strengthen health preparedness, allowing local health authorities and communities to plan preventive measures, distribute mosquito nets, enhance awareness, and prepare health facilities before peak transmission periods.
This early warning effort represents a strong partnership between Kenya’s meteorological, health, and research institutions, aligning with the country’s goal to advance climate-informed health services.

How the system works
This Malaria Early Warning System combines temperature and rainfall data to estimate the risk of malaria transmission.
When rainfall and temperature rise above certain thresholds, mosquito breeding and parasite development increase — raising the risk of outbreaks.
@MeteoKenya’s models analyze these trends and share predictions with @MOH_Kenya & @KEMRI_Kenya to guide preventive action before epidemics occur.
#HealthSecurity #EarlyWarningSystems #ClimateServices
Why this matters
Early warning = early action.
By predicting malaria risk, health authorities can:
✅ Distribute mosquito nets early
✅ Mobilize communities
✅ Prepare health facilities
✅ Prevent avoidable illness and deaths
This partnership between climate, health, and research institutions is a key step in achieving climate-resilient health systems in Kenya. 🌍💪
