A Ukrainian recruit speaks: We are ordinary We are ordinary… utterly unremarkable. It’s as if someone took a large container of people, sifted out all the exceptional ones, and brought the rest - the ordinary folks - to our barracks. My platoon is a mix of everyday professionals: an IT specialist, a welder, an electrician, a window company owner, a yoga instructor, an air conditioning store manager, a dump truck driver, a boat captain, a doctoral student, an engineer who designed ore factories, and many others. We eat porridge, swear, dislike Zelenskyy (or curse Poroshenko), struggle through marching drills in the scorching heat, run endlessly, and groan through morning exercises. There are no heroes here, no Schwarzeneggers, no Harvard boys, no patriotic orators, no super-soldiers. We’re simply Ukrainian soldiers, learning the craft of warfare. We learn how to kill. We try to do it well, but it happens as it happens. These are the only soldiers you'll get. There will always be ordinary soldiers, and they will carry out their difficult military duties. No one else will do it for them. Accept us and love us as we are. Unshaven, dirty, sweaty, exhausted, angry and irritable. I'm uncertain about our future. My beliefs have been shaken. Yet, I know that today at evening formation, we held a minute of silence that made the air resonate, followed by a thunderous “Glory to the Heroes” that echoed across the vast steppe. It wasn't forced; it came from deep within us, from the heart and soul. If you’ve lost faith in God or the devil, in victory, or in miracles, believe in the men and women standing guard in these steppes. There are no other gods. There are only ordinary people.
