Some opinions about Higher Ed:
ABCs:
College should be Affordable without necessary reliance on student debt, Based in the workplace, and award Credit for learning at work.
Apprenticeship Degree:
Work-based learning should be a primary focus of Higher Ed, starting with the work-based associate degree
K12 Teacher Pipeline:
Apprenticeship should be the mainstream way into the teaching profession and “related instruction” should prioritize traditional liberal arts (including math, science, and computer science)
Academic Journals:
Editors should be expected to publish a dissent or a critique paired with every article

Treating the life of the mind + the practicality of work as opposing goals is a false dichotomy. Great convo w/ @citizenross + Pano Kanelos on @ReachUniversity's Apprenticeship 2.0 on what a liberal arts education means in today’s world. Full podcast: lnkd.in/e2pgjx_8
How do you get the pen to write your own future? There are many ways. Each learner has different goals, challenges, and barriers.
There is no “This One Thing” — as much as we humans wish there were one answer to all the hard questions.
📋 Competency-based education clears barriers, centers focus on skills, and recognizes what learners know and what they can do.
💼 Apprenticeship Degrees provide an education for human flourishing — and an affordable, paid path to a career.
📚 Liberal education — dialogue with other humans and dialogue with the great human-created works — frees the mind in the age of AI to Think Different.
CBE graduates talked about all this on the learner panel that I moderated at #CBExchange — the nautically inspired must-attend annual conference of the Competency-Based Education Network (C-BEN).
To the crowd of swashbuckling pedagogues in the room our learner panel offered a call to action:
Keep Going!
Learners need more innovation in education.

Proud of what @ReachUniversity is proving: the workplace is the campus. Job-embedded Apprenticeship Degrees flip the old “degree first, job later” model on its head.
Florida’s teachers and working adults need this disruption.
Let’s bring REACH to @EducationFL.
📣 @ReachUniversity has received the largest private philanthropic investment in its history from @AscendiumEd, expanding Apprenticeship Degrees across five states and building a multi-state evidence base to scale opportunity for working adults. Join us. #ApprenticeshipDegrees

Our why at Reach started with the teacher shortage. Today it’s about that, and more — it’s fundamentally about delivering the American Dream. Even school superintendents see it this way, now. instagr.am/p/DdCD5b1sXGK/
Higher ed is drunk on student debt.
Affordability is the cure.
That’s why “A” is for affordability in the ABCs of Apprenticeship Degrees.
If you’re in NYC on Thursday 9/3 let’s party!

HANDY is an amazing organization in a state that’s on the move.
Met with @HANDYSouthFL. For 40 years they’ve helped foster youth move from survival to self-sufficiency.
Education + the dignity of work is how we lift kids out of dependency.
Skills, not subsidies.
Opportunity, not a permanent place in the system.
That’s the Florida we should build.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was the best contribution to child literacy ever made by a celebrity. Our paths crossed once, in the 90s, backstage at a talk show, and I was completely tongue-tied and starstruck. RIP Dolly. You were a complete, irreplaceable one-off.
My remarks at FreedomFest last month with Pano Kanelos and @chadthevenot about the revolution needed in Higher Ed.

Teacher apprenticeships -- earn-as-you-learn degrees for aides -- create teachers who are ready from Day 1.

We’re trying to help people afford an expensive college education rather than trying to make college inexpensive.
That’s the wrong approach in my book. What we need is a disruptive approach to higher ed that does not depend on subsidy for accessibility.
@citizenross is the President of a college doing just that: Reach University. He and I recently published an article in @EducationNext on this.
He also joined me on The Future of Education recently where we covered many of the same topics.
Spoke at @TheFreedomFest about radically reinventing edu with Pano Kanelos, @ChadThevenot, and Jessica Kill of Kelsey Grammer’s American Revelation Foundation.

The personal computer wasn't simply a cheaper mainframe. It was a fundamentally different model. What if higher ed needs a reinvention, too? #ApprenticeshipDegrees @EducationNext @citizenross @michaelbhorn
