Was testing an agent that needed one paid enrichment step. Everything worked until the caller had no balance. The tool did the correct thing: 402 payment_required but the agent wasn’t wrong. It just had nowhere to go. The workflow died at the payment boundary

Aaaand that became Tollgate; an open-source paid-action runtime for MCP tools. You wrap an async handler with paidTool() and define the price, fallback behavior, idempotency key, and handler. Tollgate handles the messy parts around it: fallback, metering, idempotent replay, charge recovery, and traces.

It's still in developer preview, not yet at the level of a production payment infrastructure. Our first demo approach is a Firecrawl-style MCP/search-enrichment flow(gonna publish a better version of it soon). I'd like to get feedback from people developing paid MCP tools, agent APIs, data scraping/call/enrichment tools, or payment flows around x402/MPP/Stripe.
