This is a great conversation. Ciaran gives some really useful nuggets here for Gaelic Football in particular, but any coach will get something. Sticking at the listening helps. I’ve gotten a lot from Ciaran and basketball over the years. However it doesn’t transfer immediately. I sat at Ballincollig training sessions watching (I was the S&C) and was reverse engineering for football trying to transfer ideas, but it’s not easy or immediate. And I was actually watching it, so listening means a few listens in my view. New game means; Basketball for tactical ideas Aussie Rules for conditioning ideas Soccer for ideas on pressing too, but more so to get back the lads who “played a bit years ago” who could do a bit of pressing and have those massive engines. Soccer is holding a lot of gems around the place adjacent to Gaelic Football teams. Have the chat.

Skill acquisition has a tribalism problem. There are real arguments in this field; How much a coach should instruct? Whether external focus is always better? Whether some approaches genuinely do work for all? Those are a small few that are omnipresent, unsettled, and healthy. Then there’s “constraints good, drills bad, you don’t get it.” Only one of those is science.
