What happened to the sulfur from the Chicxulub impact? See 🧵 to find out how @azerkle, @jdwitts, Mark Claire, Linda Ivany, Tom Yancey, Chegjie Liu and I show in pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.21… that stratospheric sulfur was central to cooling and the K-Pg extinction. Img © J. McKay CC

ALT This picture illustrates a scene from northern Laurentia (North America) in the period a few weeks after the Chicxulub impact showing the onset of freezing weather and skies loaded with sulfur aerosols. The focus is on the last surviving dinosaurs - here a pair of T-Rex chicks, which somehow survived the initial impact phenomena, but which will soon succumb to the cold. Just a reminder that Goldschmidt is for organic geochemists too! If you are thinking of coming, check out the session @AZoceanographer and I are convening. Great Lakes, great food and great science, what more could you ask for? Hope to see you in August. conf.goldschmidt.info/goldsc…

Thanks Niels! This study was a labor of love with @RowanMartindale @chrisjunium @AdinaPaytan and other greats, and yet again these clams surprised me! 🧵
This is a very important study in which @DantheClamMan and colleagues use a combination of #nitrogen #isotope data and growth models to show that high-resolution nitrogen isotopes in #giant #clam shells contain a signature of their #photosymbiosis 🦪☀️

Excited to share a new paper by @gcoffey_ that compiles estimates of friction heating from earthquakes across many faults to show how the energy budget of large and small earthquakes are different. Published in all OA and no-pub-fee @WeAreSeismica: seismica.library.mcgill.ca/a…

A chance meeting in the hallway of Goldschmidt Boston led to some exciting new work led by @taiswdahl on Early Devonian CO2. A huge effort using models, modern and fossil lycophytes shows that CO2 was low (~600ppm) before the growth of large forests. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

The newest HRRR model run has 70 inches of snow falling in less than 24 hours just south of Buffalo, NY.
This is shaping up to be potentially one of the most extreme snowstorms in US history.

I never thought that the day would arrive that this would happen.
Twitter has just suspended the journal Scientific Reports for impersonating the journal Nature.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The account depicted in the screenshot is not the account for the Nature Portfolio journal "Scientific Reports." The correct handle is @SciReports.

Every year I read a lot of grad school applications from accomplished people that don't give me the info I'm looking for. It feels like a major hidden curriculum thing. So here's (my opinion on) how to write a great Statement of Purpose/Research for a PhD program. 🧵 1/

ABC News just said Matthew Perry estimates he has spent $9 million on recovering from his substance use disorder an y'all expect Appalachians living in poverty to do it on their own.
