Season 2 of Sold a Story appears to be about Direct Instruction.
Emily Hanford and her team went deep on an approach with decades of evidence behind it... one the education system has mostly rejected anyway.
Trailer’s out. Season starts Oct 15.

Excellent article by @matthewgburgess. So many great points, including these:
🎯 "Admissions tests, real grading norms and prerequisite pathways are not tools of oppression; they are tools of opportunity. They provide clarity for students and early warning signals for institutions to intervene before small gaps become failures."
"schools should adopt evidence-based instructional practices and evaluate instructors on demonstrated student learning rather than popularity or ideological conformity"

Phones in school impair learning.
The results from a large randomized controlled trial involving 16,683 students across 10 higher education institutions found that phone bans improve students’ academic achievement, with particularly pronounced benefits for low-performing students.
The effect size of removing phones was about one third as big as the effect of changing from an average teacher a very good teacher for an entire academic year.
Students who experienced the in-class phone bans also became significantly more supportive of such restrictions and perceived them as beneficial. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

Evidence on the harmful cognitive effects of TikTok, Reels, and other short form video keeps growing. It's not just the content, it's the attention fragmentation and the declining ability to plan for the future.
