“Disposable Heroes” is one of the longest, most aggressive songs Metallica ever wrote, an eight-minute anti-war assault.
This is Germany, 1985, the night they debuted it live, months before Master of Puppets even came out. And it’s one of only three times Cliff Burton ever played it. He’d be gone a year later.

“Gentlemen, we need a new commercial and I’m ready to listen to ideas. Smith?”
“Well, boss, what if we got the guy from Alice and Pete Rose to sing a fucking duet about smelling like a man?”
“You’re going to run this fucking company one day, Smith.”

Every year, Rory Gallagher came home to Cork to play Macroom, Ireland’s first open-air rock festival.
In 1978, he made it legendary. He rolled up in a car, grabbed his battle-scarred ‘61 Strat, ran straight up the steps with no soundcheck, and tore into “Shin Kicker.”
Pure rock and roll.

Cliff Burton was tragically killed when Metallica's tour bus crashed between Stockholm and Copenhagen. September 27, 1986. The tragedy occurred early on the morning of September 27, 1986, near the small town of Dörarp, just north of Ljungby in southern Sweden. Metallica was riding a wave of critical and commercial acclaim on their European tour supporting Master of Puppets. They had just played the Solnahallen arena in Stockholm the night before and were traveling south toward Copenhagen for their next scheduled show.
The circumstances surrounding Burton’s sleeping location remain one of rock music's most haunting twists of fate. The bunks on the band’s tour bus were cramped and uncomfortable. On the evening of September 26, Burton and guitarist Kirk Hammett decided to settle who would get first choice of bunks by drawing cards from a deck. Burton drew the Ace of Spades. He selected the bunk near the window that Hammett had been occupying, while Hammett moved up toward the front of the bus.
Shortly before 7:00 a.m., the tour bus skidded violently off the road on the E4 highway and flipped onto the grass embankment. Burton was thrown through the window, and the rolling vehicle landed directly on him. Attempts to lift the bus with a crane failed when the cable snapped, dropping the vehicle back down. Burton died at the scene at just 24 years old. The driver blamed the crash on a patch of black ice, though James Hetfield walked miles along the roadway in the cold searching for ice and found none.

Have you ever noticed we live in a country where a 95-year-old man can walk into a mud pit in Chicago, call his band The Fuckers, and start reciting “Enter Sandman” like he’s giving a TED Talk from the afterlife?
William Shatner. Ninety-five. Riot Fest. Douglass Park. Thirty-five minutes. Spoken-word heavy metal. In the mud. With people cheering like this is normal.
It is not normal. It is magnificent.
He did “Crazy Train.” He did “Ace of Spades.” He did Metallica. Not sang them. Talked them. Like Captain Kirk got trapped in a guitar amp and decided to negotiate with Satan instead of the Klingons.
Behind him: actual musicians. Marcus Nand. Phil Soussan. Grown men who have paid rent with real notes while a nonagenarian stands there going, “What the F is heavy metal?” and somehow makes it a question worth answering.
Brian May is on the record. Tony Iommi is on the record. The album is called *What the F Is Heavy Metal?* which is the most honest title in music since someone first admitted most of it is just louder complaining.
The crowd ate it up. Of course they did. We will watch a man old enough to remember radio as furniture stand in wet dirt and dare death to tap him on the shoulder. Death probably took one look, said “I’m not dealing with this today,” and went to find someone easier.
You’re never too old to live out your dreams. That’s the line they always use. The real line is: most people quit the second it gets embarrassing. Shatner waited until embarrassing became the whole act, then sold tickets.
Follow @wickedsmaahht before the rest of the timeline figures it out.
