Cannabis is the strangest industry on earth because it exists in a legal gray zone that makes absolutely zero sense. It’s legal in some states, illegal federally, and largely completely tolerated nationwide. Cannabis businesses raise capital, process billions in sales, and employ 500,000+ people in an industry that the federal government still defines as criminal. Cannabis is schedule 1 the most dangerous of substances. But here’s the paradox. Because people can access cannabis, legally or not, there’s no political momentum to federally officially change anything about its status. The people can already get what they want. Grandparents use gummies to sleep. Cancer patients use tinctures to relieve nausea. World class athletes use cannabis to relax and recover. Conservatives and liberals alike. People love cannabis because it’s natural and extremely effective. Even in prohibition states, consumers get synthetic or untested cannabis through “hemp” loopholes or illicit markets. The result is an industry that’s stuck. No mass movement. No sense of urgency. No federal pressure. Access without legality has created regulatory complacency at the federal level. Cannabis is an entire $40+ billion economy built on contradictions. And just tolerated enough to function but ignored enough to stay completely broken. How weird.
