A new COVID-19 variant known as NB.1.8.1 is contributing to a resurgence of cases globally. This variant, a sublineage of Omicron, has been designated a “Variant Under Monitoring” by the @WHO was first identified in January 2025 and has since been detected in multiple countries.
Continue regular handwashing and mask wearing if you are unwell, would be key in mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
We are happy to share our new study on the ongoing Chikungunya outbreak in Sri Lanka—coinciding with the CDC issuing a travel warning. Genomic data reveals a mutated strain with enhanced mosquito transmission potential. Read more: cidrap.umn.edu/chikungunya/c…
Our genomic analysis shows 2025 Sri Lankan CHIKV strain belongs to the Indian Ocean lineage, with mutations (E1:K211E, E2:V264A) enhancing fitness in Aedes aegypti. Unique changes (nsP3:T224I, nsP4:S90A) may boost transmission efficiency—raising critical public health concerns.
