In September 2024, less than seven weeks before the presidential election, the Fed handed the incumbent Democratic administration an unusually large half-point rate cut.
Even though Powell admitted that the economy was growing at a solid pace. He said the labor market remained solid. He said there was no elevated risk of a downturn. Core inflation was still 3.2 percent.
Yet the Fed cut interest before Americans voted.
Now it is September 2026, seven weeks before the midterms, and the Fed has done the opposite.
Unemployment is lower than it was in September 2024. Core CPI is lower than it was in September 2024. But instead of providing relief, the Fed raised rates, increasing borrowing costs and tightening financial conditions immediately before voters decide whether Republicans retain Congress.
The Fed claims inflation requires action. But the current increase is being driven heavily by energy prices, war, tariffs, and supply disruptions. Raising interest rates will not produce a single barrel of oil, reopen a shipping route, end a war, or eliminate a tariff.
It will make mortgages, credit cards, business loans, construction, and investment more expensive. It’s like the point is to weaken the economy before the election. It’s ridiculous.
Before the 2024 election, the Fed used its discretion to help the Democratic incumbent.
Before the 2026 midterms, it used that same discretion to hurt the Republican incumbent.
The Fed put its hand on the scale in 2024.
It is doing it again in 2026.
And I for one think it’s complete BS.

⚡️The energy shock is beginning to ration real economic activity.
Airlines sit close to the physical edge of the economy because fuel is one of their largest variable costs and they cannot manufacture their way around it. When jet fuel gets expensive enough, there comes a point where raising fares no longer solves the problem. Higher fares destroy demand. Lower fares destroy margins.
Then capacity gets cut.
That is the transition worth watching.
Once an airline begins cancelling economically marginal flights because fuel makes the route unattractive, the oil shock has escaped the commodity screen. It is now deciding which pieces of the economy are allowed to happen.
Fewer flights means fewer seats.
Fewer seats means higher fares on surviving routes.
Higher fares mean fewer discretionary trips.
Fewer trips hit hotels, restaurants, conferences, tourism, regional airports, rental cars, and every local economy attached to human movement.
The shock propagates.
And aviation could simply be the first highly visible layer.
Trucking feels diesel.
Agriculture feels diesel and fertilizer.
Manufacturing feels freight and feedstocks.
Utilities feel fuel.
Consumers feel gasoline and electricity.
Eventually the entire economy starts reorganizing around an expensive energy constraint.
That is where the macro becomes genuinely dangerous.
Physical scarcity starts doing the tightening before the Fed does.
Real household income gets squeezed.
Corporate margins get squeezed.
Demand begins weakening.
Yet headline inflation stays elevated because energy is still expensive.
That traps monetary policy.
Cut too early and inflation credibility gets hit.
Hold rates high and the energy shock keeps chewing through growth.
Hike further and demand gets crushed faster while no additional barrel of jet fuel appears.
This is the stagflation transmission mechanism in its cleanest form.
The deeper shift is that the economy may be moving from a regime where money was the dominant constraint to one where physical throughput becomes the constraint.
For years, cheap capital could smooth almost everything.
Expensive fuel does not care how low the discount rate is if the barrel is unavailable or structurally costly.
That is why this United comment matters more than it looks.
If airlines are already contemplating pruning December schedules, the system is beginning to choose which movement is still worth the energy required to produce it.
That is rationing.
And once energy begins rationing mobility, the inflation story has crossed into the real economy in a much more consequential way.
BREAKING: United Airlines, $UAL, Chief Financial Officer Mike Leskinen confirmed that the carrier may cancel some December flights if jet fuel prices stay high

Rare footage of a 90s PC gamer who just realized he’s still 2 kilobytes short of running Wing Commander after fiddling with AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and HIMEM.SYS for half a day…
Kids today will never know.
What a fucking idiot.
That’s not a plane. It’s a missile, which explains why there is no landing gear remnants or a black box recorder. Sooooo, what’s the real story.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Pentagon security camera footage shows American Airlines Flight 77 a Boeing 757 striking the building not a missile. The flight data recorder and plane wreckage including landing gear were recovered.

All government unions are indefensible because there is no labor/management split. The labor elects the management. The rest of us are there to just shut up and pay for it.

You're picking the person who will be with you on the worst day of your life. The day you have to bury a parent, the day the doctor calls you to give you bad news, the day you lose the job, the day your dog that you've had for 14 years doesn't come home. That's who you're choosing. And still most people date like they're casting a movie. Do they give me butterflies? Are they exciting? Is their chemistry cool?Butterflies aren't gonna matter when life punches you in the face and when that day comes, you will not care how charming they were on the first date. You'll care whether they stayed, you'll care whether they showed up, you'll care if they made the effort and they made the unbearable feel bearable. The older I get, the less I'm asking myself if I want to spend a saturday night with this person, and the more I find myself asking, do I want this person to stand next to me when my life falls apart

There was an entire subgenre of movies in the 90's I like to call "Gen X bullshit" where a bunch of well off young adults complain about The Man and the dangers of """selling out"""
There is a movie from 1994 called "Reality Bites" starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller that was a giant hit and a cultural touchstone for that era. It has fallen into obscurity, because today it is like a relic from the distant past or a strange foreign country.
Winona is a brilliant documentary filmmaker, who has a will-they-or-won't they with struggling musician Ethan who is adamantly against selling out or compromising his creative integrity. Then, she meets Ben, who is a corporate suit with an MTV style network. Ben says he can sell Winona's documentary to his company, and Ben and Winona start dating, but all of Winona's friends think Ben is a stuck-up douchebag. Then Winona discovers that Ben has edited her documentary into the style of early 1990s MTV and she dumps him and goes back to Ethan, who was right all along about how Ben was a soulless sellout.
These values are nonexistent today. There are no musicians like Ethan anymore. There is no path to success for them. Every aspiring creative Winona or Ethan is on YouTube or Instagram chasing sponsorships. There is absolutely no compunction about shaping content to suit the audience. Today's Winona would watch hourlong videos about how to make video thumbnails that get better engagement. There is no Ethan Hawke type today who would refuse to shill socks by mail during ad breaks in his podcast.
The movie's one very modern touch is that it has a mid-credits scene like a Marvel movie, which shows a clip of an extremely early-90s laugh-track sitcom about characters based on Winona and Ethan, and then it ends with a reveal that this show was created by Ben Stiller.
Ethan gets the girl, but Ben is the real winner.
I'm gonna need a digital-only gamer to tell me why exactly renting a game for $80 that they can take away anytime they want is better than buying the same physical game for the same amount of money that you can keep forever. And no, "convenience" or "it's the future" don't count.

Just saw this on Reddit.
This is why physical media is so important and why you shouldn't spend your hard earned money on buying digital copies from companies that don't give a shit out you.

I have a rule: I’m slow to trust anyone that wasn’t cool in high school. Not because being cool makes you trustworthy. It’s because NOT being cool during that time leaves most people with lifelong cope complexes that seep into everything they do, for the rest of their life.
Jonah Hill says jiu jitsu has him ready to “annihilate” anyone who still sees him as the fat guy from Superbad
“I love Brazilian jiu jitsu, except my body is begging me not to love it. My wife is often like, ‘You’re not going to become a professional fighter. You know that, right? You’re a comedian’”
“If we got into it, I would f*ck you up. I would f*ck all three of you up”
“My favorite thing is people are like, ‘Oh, Jonah Hill, f*cking fat guy from Superbad.’ And I’m like, ‘I would f*cking annihilate you, dude. I’m not kidding you. Try it. If you see me, try it, dude. Bring it. Who’s got it?’”
