This Federal budget, CFIB is asking the government to reduce the all-time-high costs of doing business in Canada as a small firm with these four recommendations.
Strengthening these businesses, including CFIB members, will secure Canada’s economy in the face of uncertainty.

Red tape doesn't just hurt small businesses. Cutting unnecessary red tape could help free up valuable physician time and improve access to care.

Notably absent from today's budget presentation was any discussion of the impact on non-residential taxpayers. Calgary businesses paid 46% of the property tax share in 2025. As budget deliberations continue, @cityofcalgary should be transparent about what proposed increases mean for local employers and small businesses.
NEW: Calgary city council has released preliminary budget estimates for the 2027-30 budget.
It outlines three property tax increase scenarios that would see the typical Calgary homeowner paying an additional $52/month.
Wing night is becoming another casualty of rising costs. 🍗 Small businesses are paying more for food, labour, utilities, taxes, and red tape, making it harder to keep customer favourites affordable. When costs go up, prices eventually follow. No one misses those 10-cent wings more than the restaurant owners who used to serve them. cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/c…
📉 Alberta small business confidence fell 2.5 points to 52.3 in September, as tariff uncertainty and rising costs continue to weigh on businesses.
Tax & regulatory costs and insurance costs were the top pressures, followed by wage costs and fuel costs.
The province's decision to suspend the fuel tax is a welcome step that will help ease cost pressures for many entrepreneurs. cfib-fcei.ca/en/media/tariff…
“Hundreds of thousands of small businesses and millions of workers in the broader economy are affected when labour disputes happen. Recent strikes and lockouts have cost small business billions. The recent Canada Post strikes alone cost small business owners around $100 million per day in lost productivity and delays.”

Thank you, Premier Smith, for listening to Alberta's small business community!
Fuel costs remain the second-largest cost constraint facing small businesses, according to CFIB's Business Barometer. Suspending the fuel tax will provide welcome relief at the pump.
Since July, 661 Alberta small business owners signed CFIB's petition after being left out of the Alberta Energy Rebate. Today's announcement shows those concerns were heard. #ABPoli #SmallBusiness
Global uncertainty continues to push energy prices higher, and that’s putting more pressure on Albertans’ wallets.
Today I announced that relief is on the way. Starting Oct. 1, Alberta will suspend the full provincial fuel tax, saving Albertans 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel every time they fill up until the end of the year. This is practical relief that helps families, workers and businesses keep more money in their pockets.
Albertans already pay the lowest overall taxes in Canada, and this cut adds to our unmatched tax advantage.
📰 CFIB statement on Canada Labour Code reforms: cfib-fcei.ca/en/media/cfib-s…
CFIB looks forward to reviewing the full detail of proposed changes to the Canada Labour Code in the days ahead. It does appear that government is moving in the right direction by putting enhanced tools in place to help resolve disputes that put the larger economy in jeopardy.
Work stoppages in federally regulated workplaces (such as ports, railways, airlines and Canada Post) do not just affect this handful of large employers and their workers. Hundreds of thousands of small businesses and millions of workers in the broader economy are affected when labour disputes happen.
We've had a decade of pro-union labour law changes, most of which was supported by all parties keen to court political support from unions. These changes have led to a much larger number of strikes and lockouts. When we close our ports, stop our rail and air service and even cancel the mail for months, it doesn't send the message that Canada is open for business.
While the proposed changes are promising, none of this has been tested in the real world. I worry these changes may not be enough or that they may be simply ignored by unions who want to test the government's resolve. Government should be prepared to consider expanding essential services legislation if the new tools fail to reduce the number of work stoppages in Canada's critical supply chain.
