Well said.
I said Chelsea were one of the biggest beneficiaries of the international break. They got that break exactly when they needed it, and you can see the difference in their performances since returning.
First, it gave Xabi Alonso more time on the training ground to work on his defensive structure. Before the break, Chelsea were too easy to play against. Games were too open, the spaces between the midfield and defence were too easy to exploit, and they weren’t controlling transitions well enough. Since returning, there’s been a noticeable improvement in their overall defensive organisation. That’s coaching.
Then there’s Caicedo. His return has been massive. Chelsea have lacked that proper defensive presence in midfield, someone who can win duels, break up attacks and protect the back four. With him back, the defence is getting better protection, and Chelsea are doing a better job of stopping attacks before they become dangerous. You can even see them switching to a back 4 during games.
Henderson deserves credit, too. His partnership with Caicedo gives Chelsea a better balance in midfield. He’s bringing experience, positional discipline and leadership, while Caicedo provides the defensive security. It’s not just about winning tackles, it’s about controlling the game and making sure the team isn’t constantly exposed.
The important thing is that this improvement isn’t just down to individual defending. It’s about the relationship between the midfield and the backline, how Chelsea manage transitions, and how much control they have over games.
Two wins, 7 goals scored and just one conceded since the break. It’s still a small sample, and there’s more work to do, but they’re beginning to look like a team with a much clearer defensive structure.
🔵36 year old Jordan Henderson has covered the most distance of any player in both the last two matches, clocking up a total of 24.1KM. #CFC
