Thanks @tonywalker1 for this tribute to the late Tony Eggleton, our past Chair amongst his many other talents. Your own contribution to our Foundation also noted with gratitude.
Personally grateful to Tony (with Rodney Cavalier) as inaugural chair establishment of the Charles Bean Foundation honoring war correspondents going back to the Boer War reported for the SMH by the Banjo. Next in Canberra visit the memorial at the AWM all who reported @cew_bean

We are saddened to learn of the passing of our friend Tony Eggleton AO CVO. Tony was a driving force in the CEW Bean Foundation, and was Chair from 2002-2007. He was a leading light in developing the War Correspondents Memorial, among his many achievements. Vale, thank you Tony.

An interesting historical review of aspects of the wool industry, Charles Bean's chronicling of parts of life in the NSW wool trade and the role of cycling. A great read. #backonthewooltrack

Shirley Shackleton, the widow of Balibo Five journalist Greg, has died in a Melbourne aged care home after a long illness. She fought tirelessly for 47 years to try to get justice for her husband and the four others who were murdered by Indonesian troops. #7NEWS

Thanks @cew_bean for this tweet. Noteworthy that #insiders today could not find time to discuss this awful anniversary, even briefly. #auspol #ausmedia #lestweforget

47 years on from their brutal murders by Indonesian troops in East Timor, the families of journalists ,the #Balibo5 and Roger East, still have no justice. Successive Australian Governments have let them down ..gutless and unprincipled in their weak pursuit of the perpetrators.

Today we remember Greg Shackleton, Malcolm Rennie, Tony Stewart, Brian Peters and Gary Cunningham who were murdered in Balibo, East Timor. While a coronial inquest identified an Indonesian military officer likely to have ordered the murder, no one has ever been called to account.

Agree @MelissRob and your book Through Her Eyes (with Trevor Watson) is a vital resource! We curate some open source leads and resources that might help journalists, researchers, students and historians on Australian War Correspondents here: cewbeanfoundation.com/news-f…
Australian Lorraine Stumm covered WWII from Singapore, Douglas MacArthur's HQ in Brisbane and Port Moresby in New Guinea. She was the first correspondent to interview a European survivor of the atomic bomb blast at Hiroshima. One of the crew of correspondents who saw too much.
There are War Correspondents Memorials in other countries across the world. Worth recalling many of our first drafts of history on war and conflict come from War Correspondents, helping us understand and interpret warfare. We remember them.

Timely tweet from @AWMemorial, Bean passed away some 54 years ago today. A great portrait of him and Effie as well. Upon retirement they enjoyed life at a house named "Clifton" at #Collaroy until they were parted. May they both rest in peace.
#OnThisDay in 1968, Charles Bean passed away at the age of 88. Today we celebrate Charles' life and his vital contributions in establishing the Australian War Memorial. Learn more: ow.ly/xU9U50KsJIw
