Some epic engineering work to make the Android Java/Kotlin runtime updatable via Google Play system updates. Enabled us to improve app startup on old versions of Android by up to 30%. Great example of the power of modular OS system components android-developers.googleblo…

The skill I urge everyone to strengthen is critical thinking. Whenever you don’t fully understand something: ask “why?” and “how?” and get those answers. Dig deep if need to. When you think critically, you might not follow the masses at all times. And when you do: you know why.

Question to my fellow mobile devs out there: What tool do you currently use to proxy network requests nowadays? Charles is ok. Old but works. Flipper works well and it's easy to setup but I don't think it has a Charles- like "Rewrite" feature to overwrite network responses.

Observation: staff-level software engineers who are good at getting complex projects done in larger orgs do a lot of the stuff TPMs would do. Many good ones observed or worked with from TPMs, technical PMs, EMs and often consult them to build these “non-sw engineering” skills.

I prefer to rebase before the PR is up and merge and push after. Force pushing after a PR is up makes it hard for reviewers to know the diff since their last review and often messes up comment anchors.

There’s a time when I did - and loved doing - late night coding sessions, and had no problem working overtime. I was young, cared little for sleep and had no family. Create a culture that expects long and late hours and you’ll attract this demographic. It is often deliberate.

"Low performers" often become high performers when they move to another team. The team matters. A lot.

Why I no longer give feedback on product ideas. And why, if you're a founder, I don't think you you should seek feedback from people writing about the industry, but two, much more relevant groups: - Current/future customers - Current/future investors
