This is incredible.
An Algerian Hamas supporter who became an illegal overstayer in Britain, lied to immigration officers about it, and went to prison for it, is now in a senior role at the BBC.
Because the Tories and Labour failed to deport him.
Hicham Yezza has a long record of supporting Islamist violence.
He was arrested in 2008 for possessing an al-Qaeda terrorist training manual.
He came to Britain on a visa that expired in 2003. He stayed anyway. When immigration officers caught up with him, he told them his passport with the visa stamp had been stolen. They found it in his flat.
A jury convicted him of deception. He was jailed for nine months.
Then he won his appeal against deportation, and was later handed British citizenship.
Now he’s the Principal Data Scientist in the BBC’s “Responsible AI” division, helping to decide how AI shapes what BBC News tells you.
Before that he worked at BBC Monitoring, briefing BBC journalists on the Middle East.
Can you guess what kind of briefings he gave them?
He should never have been allowed to stay. Under Reform, people like him never will be.
Under Operation Restoring Justice, we will detain and deport anyone who broke into our country.
Our borders will mean something again.

With all due respect Ambassador @USAMBTurkiye, I would urge you to reconsider your (mis)characterisation of the regime in Iran. Any regime whose forces gleefully murder tens of thousands of Iranians protesting, or whose judiciary executes civilians daily for protesting, or whose leadership orders those murders in addition to consistently spends all its resources funding terrorism and bloodshed while Iranians cannot put food on the table is fundamentally and completely evil.
If the regime in Iran isn’t evil, what is?

Stop trying to defend Israel from a standard of perfection. Defend Israel by asking yourself what other countries would do when faced with a similar threat. Try that and you'll quickly understand how truly remarkable a country Israel is.

This is worth a minute of your time. The BBC employing another dodgy person, this time an illegal immigrant, who hates Israel. This is what licence fee payers get in return. If you didn’t hate the @BBC enough already…
A man jailed for immigration deception after a judge condemned his “deliberate, extended manipulation” of the system is now the BBC’s principal data scientist for Responsible AI, helping shape how the corporation uses AI and how news is represented through it.
Hicham Yezza (picture here with Moazzam Begg, the former Guantánamo Bay detainee) was sentenced to nine months in prison in 2009 after falsely claiming he had permission to remain in Britain. He had overstayed his visa by more than five years. He later successfully appealed against deportation and is now a British citizen.
Before joining the BBC, Yezza also described Hamas rocket attacks as “resistance”, accused Israel of ethnic cleansing and called it an apartheid regime built on stolen land.
He founded the pro-Palestinian Ceasefire magazine and later joined BBC Monitoring in 2021, where The Telegraph says he produced reports concerning Gaza.
His current BBC role involves guiding responsible AI policy and developing benchmarks for how AI assistants represent public-service news.
There is an extraordinary contrast here.
When the Asserson Report used AI alongside data scientists and other researchers to analyse millions of words of BBC Israel-Hamas coverage, the corporation responded: “We have serious questions about the methodology of this report, particularly its heavy reliance on AI to analyse impartiality.”
Yet the BBC now entrusts a senior role in determining how AI should approach and represent news to someone who had publicly expressed such strongly anti-Israel views before joining it.
The BBC says Yezza’s controversial statements and immigration case pre-date his employment, that he has not breached its social-media rules while working there, and that he stopped working for Ceasefire when he joined. So that's all OK then!
An extraordinary background — and an extraordinary contrast in the BBC’s attitude towards AI scrutiny of news.
