First day of early voting in Hays County, by the last primary each in-person voter cast:
a 26.9-point swing toward Democratic primary voters since 2022, D+0.2 to D+27.1.
Democratic primary voters were 51.1% of first-day voters.
This is a suburban Austin county.
It is time for education leaders to shift from experimentation with artificial intelligence to accountability, focusing on student safety, measurable outcomes, clear governance and sustainable staff training.

Talarico: I am tired of us being divided into teams left versus right, blue versus red, urban versus rural. The truth is we're all on the same team.
How many people here have a an elderly parent or grandparent who needs care? So do I.
How many people here struggle to afford the high price of everything these days? So do I.
How many people here know what it means to carry the burden of student debt, or credit card debt or medical debt? So do I
The truth is that we are all on the same team. We are far more the same than we are different.

Anthropic is offering a 145k salary for a personal assistant in London.
Responsibilities include:
"Scheduling and managing calendars for leader(s) and their organization"
"Building and maintaining organizational systems for tracking and managing inbound requests"
"Managing the leader's inbox and communications with precise attention to detail"
"Handling travel logistics"
Somebody should really build some sort of tech tool that can handle this stuff autonomously.

Mike Ditka was scheduled to sing the seventh inning stretch on July 5th, 1998. This was the year that Harry Caray died and the “guest conductor” was new at Wrigley Field. Ditka got stuck in traffic and was running late. By the time the top of the seventh ended, Ditka was still not there and Steve Stone and Chip Caray stalled for time. Finally Ditka busts into the press box, grabs the mic, and screams Take Me Out To The Ball Game in twenty two seconds! Organist Gary Pressy could barely keep up! The crowd roared with approval! R.I.P. Mike Ditka

Yikes. But that makes sense. Major moves are needed for people to thrive as these technologies come online.
JUST IN: Anthropic study finds AI & robots together are already capable of performing tasks covering 81% of U.S. employment.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The Anthropic study measures technical exposure of ~80-81% of US job tasks (by working time) to LLMs or robots (mostly limited/structured settings for robots); robots are cost-competitive for only 0.3% of tasks with major barriers.

A surprising new study finds that people who sleep near their dogs don’t experience disrupted sleep. If anything, the University of Toronto researchers discovered, we humans are the ones disturbing our dogs’ sleep. nbcnews.com/health/health-ne…

Every AI data center needs power, and every power plant needs a step-up transformer to connect to the grid. If you ordered one in 2021, it arrived in under 500 days. Today it takes more than 1,120 days.
A large transformer core is made of grain-oriented electrical steel that spends about five days in a 1,200°C annealing furnace. Only one US company makes that steel: Cleveland-Cliffs.
Inside a bell annealing furnace, coils of iron with about 3% silicon stand on end in hydrogen while the furnace heats them about 15 to 20°C an hour. It takes two to three days to reach 1,200°C. As the coils heat up, tiny particles that pin the grains in place slowly dissolve, and about one grain in a million starts growing and swallows its neighbors. Then the coils sit at 1,200°C for 20 to 40 hours. Grains that started 0.01 mm across end up 10 mm wide, nearly all pointing the same way. That alignment cuts the power a transformer core loses as heat.
Cleveland-Cliffs can supply about 12 to 20% of what the US needs, by DOE's estimate. China was in a similar spot before 2000: its only volume producer covered 30% of demand. The few foreign companies that could make the high-grade version refused to license their process. Baosteel spent ten years on research and made its first good coil in 2008. By 2013 it could make 300,000 tons a year, three times what all of China made before 2000.
I build chemical plants. If you're in hard-tech, chances are you are now competing with AI data centers for the same grid equipment.
