On this day in 1813 Prince Józef Poniatowski, Marshal of the French Empire, died. He drowned whilst attempting to cross the White Elster river during the chaos of the French retreat from Leipzig. Poniatowski is buried in Wawel Cathedral in Kraków (Poland).
