Virginia Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana) in bloom. A carpenter bee snuck in the photo!
When stems are cut, viscous stem secretions become threadlike & silky like a spider's web, hence the name. Fact courtesy of missouribotanicalgarden.org #flowersonfriday #flowerphotography
This fuzzball is the Virginia Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana). A prominent characteristic of our purple friend is the dense "hairs" (filaments) at the base of the yellow stamens.
Letting its hair down along the trail today. #flowersonFriday #springtime

For reviving the SR-71, learning from the journey could be just as valuable as the actual flight testing.
The whole NASA reviving the SR-71 thing is largely framed in terms of advancing high-speed research, and clearly that would be the primary objective. This is very relevant again and especially in the regime the Blackbird could operate in, but the exercise in just achieving any flight testing at all has outsized value.
The reverse engineering, rapidly rebuilding supply chains, leveraging additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping, injecting new material, avionics, propulsion and other technologies where applicable, and above all else, building the digital toolkit to make it all happen as fast and efficiently as possible, are all exercises of great learning value.
I would not be surprised if a 'digital twin' is being created right now of the SR-71 using tail 844. Once the model exists, breakthroughs in digital engineering can be brought to bear to see how fast the program can be accelerated, both in terms of development and flight test.
Just in the act of doing all this, we can learn a LOT. And this is not an unprecedented concept, just look at programs like the X-55.
So, yes, the goal will be high-speed flight test, but so much can be learned in the journey to get there that it to must be quantified in a 'business case' for reviving the Blackbird.

Max was right next to me and caught 60fps footage of the transit! So cool.
Starship transiting the Sun this morning during Flight 14 โ prior to this morning's mission, this has never been captured before with the world's largest and most powerful rocket.
Iโve ached over this shot for years, mainly for two reasons: what does methane exhaust look like silhouetted against the Sun, and how violent are the acoustic energy waves from 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy booster?
Well...now we have an answer.

One more Raptor shot from Oceana 2026. Donโt say I never give you nice things.

I set a camera really close to the launch pad to get this shot. It was a sound activated trigger since it wasnโt safe for me to stand here.
Thatโs all 33 Raptor engines performing nominally as Starship heads to orbit for the first time.

Youโre bearish? Starship is shooting out satellites while in orbit and youโre bearish?

The darkest political instinct isnโt anger. Itโs the secret (or not so secret) pleasure people take in imagining their enemies ruined.
Once politics teaches you to hate your neighbor more than you fear national collapse, the ideology has already eaten the citizen.
Civilizations donโt collapse when everyone becomes evil. They collapse when enough decent people become exhausted, cynical, and unwilling to defend anything.
