We spent thousands of years trying to produce enough food, shelter and energy for everyone. We finally became capable of doing it. Then we invented shareholders.

"And it allowed a troubled man who built his career on lies to rise to a height so great that his fall from grace killed him."
Said the exact same thing last week. It was the people protecting the lies who ultimately killed him, not the people uncovering the truth.
Jason Arday shouldn’t be dead.
But he is dead - because he didn’t tell the truth.
And Cambridge University didn’t look for the truth - because he’s black.
And fellow black professors didn’t ask for the truth - because he is black.
Jason lied repeatedly.
And he told the exact lies that allow one to excel in the system that elite universities have adopted.
A system that factors in race, hardship, and lived experience under the banner of equity, instead of pure performance.
Nearly everyone in these institutions ignored Jason’s lies, to try and protect black people.
They called the people seeking the truth racists.
Of course there were some racists.
But the majority of people just wanted the truth.
Avoiding the truth didn’t help black people.
Double standards in academia aren’t helping black people.
They hurt the perception of black people who are truly the best, and would have held prestigious positions at elite schools, solely off the merits of their performance.
Double standards always backfire.
Even when well intentioned.
Even when intended to correct for past oppression.
Race-conscious hiring and admissions have created a situation where it is rational to wonder whether a black person has achieved their position because they were simply the best, or because they were good enough, and black.
This is not a racist thought.
It’s a rational thing to wonder when a system promotes people based on race.
It’s a thing I’ve wondered about myself, as someone who graduated from Harvard - which had race-conscious admissions.
No amount of insistence that it’s racist will make it racist.
It’s no more racist than it would be to wonder whether a white player got into the NBA off of just performance, if the NBA decided to focus on “fixing” the underrepresentation of white people.
This is the logical downside of race-conscious hiring and admissions.
You can think the downside is worth the upside.
But the downside remains.
Calling people with legitimate concerns racist didn’t protect black people.
It didn’t protect Jason.
It hurt black people who have earned their positions.
And it allowed a troubled man who built his career on lies to rise to a height so great that his fall from grace killed him.
We could have just had the truth.
Instead, we have a tragedy.

RIP Frank Beard.
Le Beard sans barbe.

I’m a gay man and a psychiatrist.
I’ve watched the explosion of rapid-onset gender dysphoria cases, especially in teenage girls.
I’ve seen the desistance data, the comorbidities, the regret, and the sterilizing effects of blockers + cross-sex hormones.
And I have never supported medicalizing children. Not once. Never.
Kids cannot consent to infertility, loss of sexual function, or permanent alteration of healthy bodies.
“Affirmation” is not neutral care — it is an ideological intervention that locks many of them onto a medical pathway most would have grown out of.
Being gay does not require me to pretend that sex is a spectrum or that a distressed 13-year-old girl is actually a boy. It requires the opposite: protecting same-sex attracted and gender-nonconforming kids from a medical fad that pathologizes them.
I will not shut up.

This story smells a whole lot worse when you scratch and sniff it.
@AnnekaSvenska was told by the two officers that she would have to do an "online thinking skills" course, specifically the Thinking Skills Hub from Digital Intervention.
digitalintervention.co.uk/pr…
Who are Digital Intervention? A 're-education' division of the controversial Red Snapper Group, a private company founded by ex-police officers who promote and provide DEI-based training and other services to police forces and the private security industry.
rsg.ltd
The Digital Intervention courses they provide are issued by police and probation officers to offenders but also issued by police to individuals who have *committed no crimes* (for example recorded Hate Incidents)
Essentially a parallel wing of UK law enforcement and behavioural intervention that has no basis in law, run by a private company, and paid for through public sector contracts.
What else are Red Snapper known for? They were paid £5 million a year from 2010 to 2017 to provide staff (including former police officers) for the IHAT Iraq Historic Allegations Team to hound military servicemen in the UK for alleged crimes against Iraqi insurgents. In some of those investigations it is alleged that former officers interviewed servicemen as 'officers' while not clarifying that they were no longer police officers and were acting solely in a private capacity.

Interestingly, for a DEI-inspired training and education organisation with links to UK police and the public sector, it is curious that their front page About Us banner says 'One group, with a single purpose', not unlike that other DEI-inspired training and education organisation with links to UK police and the public sector, Common Purpose. @CharlotteCGill @SpeechUnion @silkiecarlo
