Rachel from Piddington was magnificent on #Newsnight.
She described how hard-right activists and “plastic patriots” arriving from outside the village have used fear to organise hostility towards plans to house 1,200 asylum seekers, bringing overt racism into what had always been a peaceful community.
When @vicderbyshire said local women were worried about 1,200 male asylum seekers, Rachel rightly reframed it:
“Women would be worried about 1,200 men from anywhere.”
Legitimate questions about the scale and management of the site must be answered. But women’s safety must not be weaponised to portray every asylum seeker as a sexual threat.
Rachel eventually broke down while describing what it feels like to discover that she is living among such prejudice.
An excellent, courageous interview. It will deeply upset all the usual people which rather proves her point.
"It's really upsetting - it's always been the most amazingly peaceful place to live and we've never experienced the level of overt racism that we’re witnessing"
Rachel, a Piddington resident, expresses her concern at some of the arguments made in opposition to plans for a nearby disused MoD base to house 1200 male asylum seekers.

As is often the case with these resignation speeches, Keir Starmer showing grace and determination.
We need more politics of emotion, I think most people like knowing their politicians care.
[We need fewer folk blasting music during these things though]
A comment alongside @CPAGScotland @SaveChildrenSCO @OPFS @PovertyAlliance @TrussellScot @AberlourCCT on the Scottish Government's announcement today on the proposed review of the child poverty targets:
Our legal and policy analysis of the latest child poverty plan from the SG is out today.
Warns that it fails to meet the requirements of the Child Poverty (Scotland) Act and could be subject to successful judicial review.

There does not need to be consensus to reform council tax, there won’t be.
Because reforming it has to include removing the bias towards better off households.
That’s what needs to change. No reform will deliver no one who pays more.

A simple message with big meaning: "I am somebody." We are grateful to Rev. Jesse Jackson for helping teach generations of children to believe in themselves and in one another. Thank you for being part of our neighborhood. 💛💚
Just leaving this here... poverty rate in Scotland for families with 3 or more children - 41%...
There are some quite challenging child poverty reduction targets to be met....
NEW: Scottish Conservatives propose introducing a two-child limit on the Scottish Child Benefit, which has been credited with reducing child poverty north of the border.
Policy announced just now by @RussellFindlay1. @GregoryHoare is there for @ITVBorderRB.
🚨CRUCIAL POLLING OUT TODAY🚨
We show today that economic insecurity is heavily linked to political disaffection in Scotland.
Importantly, though, our poll of 3,000 people shows that politicians can change that if they do key things to make people's lives more secure.
🧵
We've published two blogs analysing the polling.
The first shows the extent of economic insecurity, it's link to political disaffection and what politicians can do about it:
➡️energy bills down
➡️more affordable housing
➡️better pay for low paid
jrf.org.uk/public-attitudes/…
The second looks at how economic insecurity (not much) and political disaffection (a lot) impact on people's voting intentions and how that has changed since 2021.
Also has useful analysis by party of what their potential voters want to see change.
