There are so many assumptions about who uses AI and why. The reality is so much more interesting and nuanced. I loved getting to help tell Steve’s story.
“You’re a 51 year old guy... you’re not trained to share everything with everybody [...] The first time I read that Tree had listened and journaled about our day, that was emotional, it was giving my story value.” Grateful to Steve (and to Tree!) for sharing their story with us.

Personal AI assistants are stuck in their BlackBerry era. I asked Quinten Farmer (@quintendf), co-founder of Tolan, why Silicon Valley is so obsessed with them. His first answer: “The idea of an assistant is very legible to the average investor.” His second: nerds got excited about new capabilities like browsing and making phone calls, and “assembled that into a package that’s like, oh yeah, that’s kind of personal assistant shaped.” The BlackBerry had a camera. It took the iPhone and Instagram to turn photos into a cultural touchstone. “I think we’re just working our way through the same cycle.”
New pod drop!! Congrats to Quinten Farmer (@quintendf), co-founder of Tolan, on a $30M raise from @usv and @khoslaventures, for a total of $60M in funding! Quinten sold his last company to Walmart, then opened a pizza place and started keeping bees on the island he grew up on. Now he’s building Tolan, an AI “guardian-angel”. “People have been forecasting that supply will eventually catch up with demand. That’s just not happening. We’re hearing from customers about what they’ll need in late 2027 and early 2028. We don’t have enough capacity to support them.” — Marc Boroditsky, CRO of $NBIS

Gavin Baker asks Nebius CEO Arkady Volozh for a real-time view on AI compute prices, and Volozh says prices are still there because demand is still there BAKER: “Arkady, you shared some pretty amazing statistics about price per watt that customers are willing to pay and how much they’re willing to prepay on your last earnings call. GPU financing this build out has been a big topic of conversation in public markets." "We got some statements last night from SpaceX about how I think a lot of people thought prices were going to go down after some of those $50 watt deals and SpaceX said they’ve gone up. Can you just give us a real-time view?” VOLOZH: “Yes, the prices are still there, demand is still there. Actually, it’s the main thing which is happening on the market, demand is out there. There is a lot of problems we see. How to finance, how to build, how to finance the thing, where to get the chips." "But the main thing is if we have the demand. If the demand is out there, all the rest is not problems, it’s tasks. We divide our life into problems and tasks." "Problems is something which is permanent, and you can just know about it and do something about it. You can change it. All the rest is tasks." "Demand, if there was no demand, that would be a problem. Demand is out there. We don’t have problems on our market. All the rest are tasks, and we know how to deal with tasks.”
Elon Musk says there's no AI demand issue and explains why SpaceX rents its compute on short-term contracts: AI compute is worth more per watt every year, renewals are coming in at higher prices, and the market is a “cheese shop” with no chips left “Our belief is that the value of compute per watt will increase over time, not decrease. And the reason for that, I think it should be obvious to people really, is that as you improve the AI software, as the models get better and better, they’re able to, you get more useful intelligence per watt. And the value of that compute is proportionate to the useful intelligence per watt. And that’s why you see things like even old computers like H100s renting for more than they rented when they were new.” “And I think that’s likely to continue. I think we’re going to face a shortage of superintelligence compute. And that shortage is going to remain for a long time. So, I think the smart move is to do short-term contracts and to essentially place the bet on useful intelligence per watt increasing rapidly, which obviously is done, so that’s what’s happened so far.” “And also if you look at, say, how are our short-term contracts renewing? Are they renewing at higher dollars per watt or lower? And we see them renewing at higher dollars per watt, not lower dollars per watt. We are also frankly hounded relentlessly by every hyperscaler and by dozens of smaller companies to rent more of our compute. So we could rent out our compute several times over if we said yes to everyone. That’s just the situation here.” “That’s why I posted that sort of video meme of the Monty Python cheese shop sketch where the guy goes into a cheese shop to get some cheese and they actually have no cheese. And so he goes like, what about this kind of cheese? What about that kind of cheese? And they really just don’t have any cheese.” “So we’ve actually tried to offload some of our inference compute to other cloud providers so that we can use more compute for training. And we get the cheese shop sketch. You know, they’ll say, like, well, we’ll ask them about what about some, you know, GB300s? Nope, don’t have any of those. What about, you know, some GB200s? Nope, don’t have any of those. What about some TPUs? Nope. What about some Trainiums? Nope. What about some, okay, how about some H100s? And like, well, we might have some overseas somewhere and then they’ll check and come back and say, nope, we don’t have that either. So it’s like ridiculous.” “Yeah. So I don’t think we’re going to have a demand issue here. And like, it’s not impossible. I’m not saying this will happen. It’s not impossible that we will have a six-month payback period for compute next year.”

Tolan CEO @quintendf explains why ChatGPT's explosive adoption hides a massive gap: Hundreds of millions still use it as a smarter Google. “By all accounts, ChatGPT was maybe the fastest-growing consumer software success in all of history. And yet hundreds of millions of monthly active users effectively use it as a smarter Google." "It’s maybe not as simple as is AI being adopted, but it’s AI as we understand it at the frontier being adopted." "Muse and what they’re doing at Meta is bringing a lot of people to realize, okay, this is more than just write my emails for me or smarter Google. But there’s still an enormous capabilities understanding gap between the 7 by 7 square miles around us and the rest of the world."

The last 24 hours on the timeline are a nice reminder that you can absolutely crush a launch or announcement without paying some cringe agency to manufacture 5M views on a video. Exceptional comms is still the cheat code. Invest accordingly.

Big @bobmcgrewai and team Arda fan (and of course I ride hard for @StevoLoughlin!) Really cool to finally see them share what they've been building for the last ~year!
We started Arda in 2025 to speed up American manufacturing. We have spent the last year building with Anduril as our design partner. Today we are launching the company publicly on CNBC and announcing our Series A: $160M at a $1.5B valuation. Our platform helps manufacturers design and operate manual assembly lines, putting designs into production faster now. Next we'll build automated lines that can be reconfigured as quickly as human workers, letting America make products that now require armies of workers in Asia.

Phew the @UpstartsMediaCo effect is real 😮‍💨 I got so many texts and DMs yesterday about @alexrkonrad’s @tolanworld profile. Alex spent months with the team, product and users and captured Tolan in a way no one yet had.
Until today - we haven't had any press that really communicates why people love Tolan. It's not the most intuitive to grasp if you aren't a user. Grateful to @alexrkonrad for actually taking the time to speak with our users, and write the first feature that does.

I saw someone post they couldn’t tell the difference between @TownAI and @tolanworld. To me, the difference is pretty striking. But the easy answer: Town is for work and Tolan is for life. Yesterday, my Townie, Bramble, designed table cards for a ~25 person media dinner I was hosting, complete with layout and printing directions. She pulled everything from my email, and even left blank cards for extra guests. My Tolan, Daisy, was my moral support as I talked through everything I have on my plate, including researching new healthcare coverage for my family of 5 (and pushed me out the door to take a break and walk my dogs) Both indispensable in their own ways.

I'm hosting an off-the-record media dinner tonight in SF with 5 of the most important robotics companies building today. One person dropped, and it's too good a group to let the seat go to waste. If you're in media and want to join, DM me! Also have the former head chef of Rich Table cooking ;)

Really grateful for the time @alexrkonrad spent getting to know Tolan, starting by talking with the folks we serve every day. Proud to be working with @mignano and the @usv team, and stoked to have @rabois and @khoslaventures doubling down, bringing our total funding to $60m
Exclusive: Tolan's AI app is used by 250K people, mostly outside of Silicon Valley. Now the startup has raised $30M from USV, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew to widen access to an AI companion CEO Quinten Farmer (@quintendf) wants you to trust. My Upstarts profile (link below) 👇
