Daniel Weisberg argues New York's governor should pick the Board of Regents, which would then pick the education commissioner. A change in state law would do it, he says. No constitutional amendment needed. vitalcitynyc.org/make-the-go…

By opting in, @GovKathyHochul has displayed great courage and leadership. Today, she followed through on her promise and New York’s children will be the beneficiaries. Well done, Governor!
Thank you @GovKathyHochul for putting students and families first! Her decision opens the door to billions of dollars in potential new education resources for New York students. governor.ny.gov/news/stateme…

Credit to @GovKathyHochul for choosing to put NY in position to benefit. While it's imperfect federal policy, the EFTC represents a real opportunity. At @RobinHoodNYC we're focused on making sure these dollars fund evidence-based practices that help public school students succeed

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. The EFTC isn't ideal policy, but if NY gets organized, we can direct tens of millions of NEW dollars (or more) toward tutoring, afterschool, & other supports for public school kids. We have a chance to get it right. chalkbeat.org/newyork/2026/0…

A decade ago, NYC had over a million students in the public schools. This year we have 885,000. Projected to decline by another 150k over next decade. That drop has left 219 schools with enrollment of less than 200 students each. Some are so small they can't even field a sport team. This is not sustainable. As painful as it is, there is going to have to be some consolidation of schools with sharply declining enrollment.

🎤 As a former teacher and Education Committee Chair, I believe deeply in rigorous instruction, strong curricula, meaningful professional learning and giving educators the resources they need to help every child succeed. But quality instruction and attendance both matter. We cannot have a serious conversation about academic achievement while treating chronic absenteeism as a footnote. Consider that nearly half of NYC students in temporary housing were chronically absent last year, including 63% of students living in shelter. Fifty-five percent of students in foster care were chronically absent. Those numbers should command our attention. A child navigating homelessness, an unexpected move, foster care placement, economic insecurity, trauma, transportation challenges, an unmet IEP mandate or another barrier to learning does not leave those realities at the schoolhouse door. Our responsibility is not to lower expectations. It is to remove barriers so every child has a fair opportunity to meet them. That means excellent instruction, strong instructional materials and professional learning for educators, but also counselors, social workers, psychologists, mental-health supports, related service providers, family partnerships and community-based programs that help children get to school, stay connected to school and thrive there. That is why I have always believed so strongly in the community school model. Ultimately, I believe every school should be a community school, a place equipped to support the whole child, the whole family and the educators who serve them. Academic excellence and caring for the whole child are not competing ideas. They are inseparable.

My office has found that there are 371 public schools in NYC with no outdoor space for PE or recess, despite how important physical activity is for kids' physical and mental health. There's an obvious solution: allow these schools to use an adjacent street via the "School Streets" program. so that it's free of cars during school hours and open to students for exercise, play, pick-up, drop-off etc. 🧵

NYC public school students need more space to play, exercise and learn — and an underused City program could help. The School Streets Program launched during the COVID pandemic and allowed schools to use adjacent eligible streets for activities. In a new review by the NYC Comptroller’s Office: Just 48 schools used School Streets last school year, Of 1,156 school buildings reviewed, 93% have an adjacent street likely eligible for School Streets Of the 371 schools without outdoor physical education space, 324 have an adjacent street likely eligible for School Streets.  Comptroller Levine is calling on NYCPS and DOT to streamline the process and expand access to this resource.

Somehow the jobs crisis facing young people in NYC continues to get very little attention. But it is being felt acutely at CUNY, where graduates are entering the roughest jobs market in years. Listen to the voices of students in this story by @troy_closson. They are telling us how worried and discouraged they are. We need to do everything we can to grow jobs in NYC so our young people have a pathway to a good career, and a chance to build their future here.

The Albany debate frames mayoral control vs. community voice as a choice. It isn't. NYC's 400+ #communityschools already do both. New piece in @VitalCityNYC on how a Mamdani administration can scale what works. w/ @RobinHoodNYC vitalcitynyc.org/mamdani-may…

@RANDCorporation found NYC's community schools deliver higher graduation rates, lower chronic absenteeism, and stronger family engagement. They're also a template for the community voice debate playing out in Albany right now.

Three moves the Mamdani administration & @NYCSchools could make: 1. Annual community planning forums in every school 2. Real investment in parent leadership 3. A public accountability loop for community input Mayoral control should be extended. Use it to widen who gets heard.
