All the News That’s Fit to Click is officially OUT and in the world! There are many anticlimactic moments in academia, but I can now say that holding your own book in your hands isn’t one of them. 1/x press.princeton.edu/books/ha…
New from me and @JuliaTicona1: an essay for @nytimes about the now-or-never efforts to secure a future for paid creative work in the age of gen AI, and why they matter.

Honored to receive funding from @NEHgov (and beyond excited to join forces with @JuliaTicona1) for a new project on creative labor and generative AI...

🎇Hi everyone! Interrupting my months-long twitter hiatus to share two new publications I'm proud of, both published open-access in @IJoC_USC (1/5)🎇:
The 2nd, Structures of Capital and Sociotechnical Change (w/@bshestakofsky), argues that if we want to understand why tech develops as it does, we have to look more closely at the role of financing models (and Venture Capital specifically) (4/5): ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/arti…
(This piece is part of a fantastic symposium about Sociotechnical Change curated by @ananny and @simognehudson -- all the pieces can be found here and I encourage you to check them out! ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/issu…). (5/5)
Thank you for reading! (also I think reading a book 2 years after publication counts as early in academia-time :)
It’s my bad to read @cbpetre’s book so late! Her book broadened my perspective of what autonomy means for journalists who are not working at news organizations with multiple levels of editorial assessment. It shows how control and autonomy co-exists in metric-driven organizations

It feels like there are two stories topping the news today--the strikes in Hollywood and the fight over AI. This book, written fifty years ago, is one of the best guides to understanding both.
I got tenure!!
Congratulations to #RUSCI faculty members Shawnika Hull (#COM), Sunyoung Kim (#LIS), and Caitlin Petre (#JMS)! The @RutgersU Board of Governors has approved their promotions effective July 1, 2023! More: ow.ly/WrJa50NPqFH @RutgersNB @cbpetre

All of twitter’s ML Ethics, transparency, and accountability team (except one). was laid off today. So much for that responsible ML initiative, huh?

My smart friend Max (so smart he's not on twitter) went on @CNN to talk about how climate disaster worsens economic inequality - and how better housing policy can help!
Long term effects of #ClimateChange mean governments need to look at "managed retreats" of communities in risk areas, rather than constant post disaster rebuilding, says Prof Max Besbris. It will save lives - and provide opportunities, too, for better design and social equality.

New: Meet Rev. Richardson, a hospice chaplain who had to rack up “productivity points” as she tended to the dying.
Her story illustrates the rise of the worker productivity score, one of the biggest expansions of employer power in generations. 🧵 nyti.ms/3dl37lq
Platform studies friends: what's the best work to read/assign on employee activism within the big tech companies? (Tech won't build it, google walkout, etc)

"One late summer day in 2020, two weeks before his senior year would begin, a Black boy from Maplewood drowned. The silence after Omar Hutchinson’s death was deafening."
