Seen this take a few times. Lots of thoughts. Won't share them all.
Tl;dr: nothing has changed.
Most people don't understand memes. They were not invented with the Internet. They are the foundations of culture.
Art is to memes as organisms are to genes. They don't rhyme by mistake.
I, as I suspect many others, had never heard of Yung Lean or Gener8ion until this trend. Once I saw the videos I went a watch the video, streamed the song on Spotify, showed my family, played it in the car, etc.
Memes spread because they spread because they spread. By definition.
Yung Lean created this meme. Intentionally or not. The emergence of a meme is one of the greatest signals that you created something lasting.
The meme, occasionally, may in fact hit escape velocity from the artists own gravity.
We argue if Homer was a single person or a collective.
Same with Shakespeare. Or the authors of the old testament.
We barely understand the identity of the individuals behind some the most influential writers in all of history. But their memes lived on; were reinterpreted. Rewritten. Satirized. Subverted. Perverted. And retold in as many ways as possible.
The meme is what sustains. It's what lives on.
I have nothing but respect for Yung Lean, Gener8ion, and the many creators behind the project, and obviously take no credit for anything creative in the video.
I also think more people today know about all of the above way more intimately than they ever would have before the meme existed. Myself included, and I'm thankful for it.
I'm sure there are critiques worth levying and bad actors worth calling out. But, if your stance is wholesale, reflexively against the intersection of AI and art, and you view memes as "meaningless and trite" I would argue you fundamentally mis understand the world, culture and reality in which you exist.
Now, go educate yourself.

I suspect we're approaching a time where if you want to protect creative work, it has to be something that can't be digitized. AI has made is so that creative works speed run through the lifecycle from cool to cliche in a matter of months. This contributes to our cultural stagnation, making it hard for real creators to produce something with meaningful, lasting effects on other real creators. Everything becomes a meme, which is to say meaningless and trite.
